About this role: 

This role provides critical insights for clients around evaluation, selection, negotiating and contracting with IT Services & software vendors to drive better business outcomes. Some of these insights will touch upon key aspects of vendor negotiations, such as:

  • Evaluating and selecting vendors

  • Buying the right services and product mix from the right providers to meet organizational needs, including implementation, outsourcing and transformational business outcomes Pinpointing key levers for negotiation

  • Optimizing commercial models, Statements of Work (SOWs), improving discounts, identifying hidden costs, reducing risk or validation of proposals

  • Shortening the negotiation and sourcing lifecycle

This role engages Sourcing, Procurement and Vendor Management leaders, CIOs and other IT leaders through published research, conversations with clients (Inquiry), stage presentations, and client meetings. It is important that you have current knowledge of IT Services market dynamics, optimal sourcing options (insource, outsource, hybrid multisource) and providers and how software vendors operate  commercial programs, contracting models, pricing, and discounting approaches in Japan, as well as a vision for how IT Services contracting and negotiations will evolve worldwide and at a regional level. 

What you’ll do:

As a Gartner analyst you will deliver insightful contents to meet mission critical priorities of senior level clients as you will meet with them every day: on the phone, in a video conference, from the stage at a Gartner event, or face-to-face during a client or prospect visit. In every interaction analysts help senior leaders solve difficult puzzles that lead to better performance and business outcomes. To support these conversations you will research markets, practices and trends as well as produce written research for Gartner clients to leverage.

Specifically:

  • Write high quality, clear, actionable, research content (research notes, presentation slides) in both Japanese and English.

  • Review and give insights and advice on proposals and contracts created by IT software and Services vendors, particularly for the Japanese market.

  • Conduct research and analysis in IT Services and Sourcing Strategies planning and executions.

  • Deliver high quality actionable advice through a variety of media. 

  • Predict how IT services and Sourcing Strategies will develop, help clients in their negotiations and

  • Remain ahead of the curve on developments and trends with overall IT Services and Sourcing negotiations and contracting Strategies.

  • Provide high quality and timely internal research review and feedback.  Provide mentorship and support team members.

  • Lead or participate in research community meetings to discuss research issues and collaborate with peers.

  • Demonstrate thought-leadership in establishing research positions across a team of analysts.

  • Respond to client questions, create materials for and deliver to clients in person, via teleconference, video conference or webinar and event presentations.

  • Maintain Gartner’s industry leadership reputation by responding to press inquiries. 

  • Create and deliver high-value presentations at our events and in small groups of clients and/or prospects.

  • Proactively work with the wider sales organization and deliver outstanding sales support to retain and grow the business.

What you’ll need:

It helps to be obsessed with your topic! Gartner analysts are correctly viewed as THE experts. This means you need to know your markets, vendors, trends, management practices, etc. and be able to see the forest and the trees.  To join our team supporting Gartner clients you should have:

  • Subject matter expertise in contract negotiations including reviewing IT services vendor proposals

  • Understanding of the negotiation and contracting trends in the IT services market. 

  • In addition to specific IT Services commercial knowledge, experience with global and local large IT Services vendors such as IBM, Accenture, Fujitsu, NTT Data, Hitachi, NEC is desired.  This should be augmented by an understanding and curiosity about the larger business impact of new technology and business trends on IT Services contracting models and costs, and how these can be navigated successfully.

  • Ability to analyze the impact of technology such as AI on business models, contracting and pricing models of IT Services providers

  • Ability to work on a multi-cultural global team.

  • Demonstrated superior analytical skills, applying conceptual models, recognizing patterns while drawing and defending conclusions. Strong business and financial acumen as well as analytical skills are required for this position.

  • Articulate and succinct communication skills.  Fluency in Japanese and English is required with strong writing skills in both. Experience publishing and speaking engagements is an advantage.

  • 15+ years of experience in IT Service contract negotiations, technology procurement, category management, vendor management within a buying organization, outsourcer, consulting firm or reseller. 

  • Recent hands-on negotiation experience with IT Services contracts such as through enterprise application implementations, business transformation initiatives or outsourcing models. Larger, complex deal negotiation experience preferred.

  • Strong experience negotiating with global or local large IT Services vendors.

  • Bachelor's or equivalent experience, Master's degree preferred. 

  • Ability to conduct occasional travel (usually no more than 25%), regionally and globally.
