We’re on a mission to deliver riveting storytelling for all of America. At The Washington Post, you’ll help reinvent news. Our work is driven by a deep investigative spirit and enhanced by innovation to bring audiences closer to the stories that matter most.
The Washington Post is powered by the passion and talent of our people. It takes all of us to reinvent news. Beyond our award-winning Newsroom and Opinions teams, we work across many departments, including Brand & Events, Communications, Customer Care, Engineering & Product, Finance, Human Resources, Legal, Marketing & Advertising, Print Operations, and Sales.
The Washington Post is seeking a sharp, creative and digitally fluent editor to help shape how our journalism is presented, discovered and experienced across our digital platforms.
Digital Desk Editors are core members of the News Hub, the team responsible for sharpening our journalism, elevating its presentation and accelerating our connection with audiences wherever they consume our work. This is a role at the center of our digital report — blending editorial judgment, audience insight and platform expertise to ensure our journalism is distinctive, engaging and impeccably executed.
The ideal candidate brings exceptional news judgment and a deep understanding of how storytelling and platform strategy intersect. They are as comfortable line editing a complex enterprise story as they are crafting compelling headlines, programming the homepage and app, or writing urgent breaking-news alerts. They understand that presentation is journalism — and that precision, creativity and speed are equally essential.
This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom and includes night, weekend and some holiday work. An editing test may be required.
You are passionate about shaping how audiences experience journalism in real time.
You thrive on the energy of a live news environment and making smart decisions under pressure.
You enjoy translating strong reporting into compelling digital presentations.
You are curious about audience behavior and eager to experiment with new approaches.
You care deeply about accuracy, clarity, fairness and upholding The Post’s editorial standards.
Edit stories across news, features and enterprise with a commitment to accuracy, clarity, fairness and accessibility.
Write and refine headlines, summaries and display copy that synthesize stories and maximize engagement across digital platforms.
Shape and frame stories for digital audiences, applying strong knowledge of SEO, social dynamics, recirculation strategies and mobile presentation.
Program The Post’s homepage and app with urgency and creativity, delivering a compelling reader experience across devices.
Write breaking-news alerts and push notifications with precision, urgency and appropriate tone.
Monitor real-time performance data and audience trends to inform editorial and programming decisions.
Conduct A/B and multivariate testing across platforms and share insights with colleagues.
Assist with distributed platform curation, including Apple News+ and Google News, ensuring our journalism is optimized for off-platform audiences.
Support and help advance the platform strategy set by the Digital Desk Chief, contributing ideas for innovation and continuous improvement.
At least four years of experience in digital journalism, editing or platform production at a major news organization.
Demonstrated excellence in editing and crafting homepage and mobile presentations with a strong sense of voice, urgency and audience needs.
Exceptional headline-writing and story-framing skills, with fluency in SEO, mobile and social best practices.
Experience using real-time analytics tools and a track record of applying data to editorial and programming decisions.
Strong understanding of mobile-first user behavior and platform-specific optimization.
Experience working within CMS tools and digital publishing workflows.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced newsroom.
Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to present journalism with flair and precision under deadline pressure.
Interested candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and up to three relevant work samples — such as edited stories, homepage lineups, mobile curation examples or annotated headline packages — to our jobs portal. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by Mar. 30 will be prioritized. Please address the cover letter to Digital Desk Chief Emily Tsao and Managing Editor Jason Anders.
The pay range for this position is $73,600 to $110,400. The actual starting salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.
