Job Summary: This Diagnostic Radiology Technician position is assigned to the Indianapolis VAMC, Radiology Service. Employees at this level are fully functional as advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently at a level including special and complex procedures beyond the full performance level. Performs routine Magnetic Resonance Imaging procedures of the head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, upper and lower extremities.

  • VA Careers - Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: https://youtube.com/embed/I-4ku5UMvWM Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties include but not limited to: GS-9 - Prepares Magnet for daily operation, brings system up, and checks all self-calibrating parameters and quality control checks. - Cleans and prepares equipment surfaces in accordance with established infection control guidelines and equipment manufacture instructions. - Performs routine archiving status checks and deletes data according to established guidelines. - Reviews patient safety and screening history form. In addition, interviews patients for potential ferrous objects, implants, or work-related metallic injuries. - Alleviates patient anxiety by informing the patient about what the MRI examination entails and what the patient can expect. - Coordinates with radiologist for the appropriate protocol for each exam prior to scanning the patient. - Always maintains patient privacy and confidentiality. - Constantly monitors all equipment brought into the MRI environment to ensure it is MRI safe or MRI conditional. - Never permits unauthorized personnel inside zone 3 or 4 without being properly screened and escorted. - Positions patient within the MRI unit and monitors patient during all phases of the examination through direct observation and video surveillance monitoring. - Provides single and sometimes double hearing protection to patients including sound system headphones when appropriate. - Positions ECG electrodes when necessary for ECG or PPG gating and or physiological monitoring. - Programs technical factors for pulse sequences slice profiles etc for each scan in accordance with protocol set forth by radiologist and selects appropriate MRI coil for selected anatomy. - Utilizes immobilization devices, when necessary for the procedure to ensure patient motion is limited. - Constantly communicates with and monitors the patient throughout the exam, ensuring there is no contrast reaction and the patient's specific absorption rate (SAR) remains within established guidelines. - Prepares IV Contrast material as necessary examinations and injects contrast per guidelines. Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.] Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS 9: Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by : Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Preferred Experience: Applicant must be board certified by the ARRT in Radiography and must have advanced board certification in Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
