Job Summary: The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist - MRI MRSO GS-10 provides imaging services leadership in specialized and complex areas of MRI. The incumbent oversees MRI safety programs and ensures adherence to all safety standards, providing guidance to staff and ensuring patient safety. The technologist performs routine and advanced MRI and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) procedures, including multiplanar reformations and 3-dimensional reconstructions, independently.

Major Duties:

• Major duties include, but are not limited to: Arrange MRI exams to maximize scanner usage while maintaining flexibility to accommodate emergency cases, including urgent surgeries. Ensure adherence to MRI safety protocols and enforce safety procedures in daily operations. Collaborate with radiologists to determine requirements for non-standard exams, including selecting technical factors, positioning, and slice thickness, to meet diagnostic objectives. Notify radiologists of scans requiring immediate review. Administer intravenous contrast materials, ensuring proper use and patient safety. Monitor patients for adverse reactions and provide immediate interventions as needed. Oversee MRI safety policies and procedures, ensuring all staff adhere to safety guidelines. Develop, document, and implement safe operating procedures for the MRI environment. Manage MRI hazards, providing training and education on safety requirements to all relevant staff, including ancillary workers, on a regular basis. Maintain records of personnel trained in MRI safety. Develop and maintain policies for the procurement, testing, and marking of all equipment used in MRI critical areas. Ensure the safety of all equipment entering the MRI suite. Provide MRI safety education and training, in collaboration with the MRSE, ensuring policies are consistently followed. Act as a safety advisor for MRI-related equipment and protocols. Ensure compliance with health and safety standards by monitoring the implementation of measures to minimize risks associated with MRI equipment and procedures. Demonstrate proficiency in PACS, ensuring exams are reviewed and properly closed out after verifying that all paperwork has been scanned into the patient's EMR. Maintain accurate records of imaging procedures, patient information, and quality assurance activities. Edit exams in RIS and ensure the proper documentation of imaging activities. Properly identify patients using two identifiers (e.g., full name, social security number) and confirm information to avoid errors in imaging or patient misidentification. Screen MRI patients in advance for contraindications such as implants, conducting thorough research and consulting with the MRSE for safety determinations. Maintain inventory and stock of MRI supplies and related materials, ensuring readiness for procedures. Stay current with advancements in MRI technology and techniques, incorporating new developments to improve imaging quality and efficiency. Rotate on-call duties to ensure 24/7 MRI coverage, responding promptly to imaging needs during off-hours. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d). Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the DRT occupation. For employees who do not meet all of the basic requirements in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply: (1) DRTs that require a certification, may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journeyman) level, or changed to lower grade within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journey level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions. (2) DRTs that require a certification only at higher grade levels must meet the certification requirement before they can be promoted to those higher grade levels. (3) DRTs who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis, until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard. (4) DRTs initially grandfathered into this occupation, who subsequently obtain additional education and/or certification that meet all of the basic requirements of this qualification standard must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation (5) Employees who are retained as a DRT under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry as a DRT. Grade Determinations: Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO), GS-10 At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. AND Certification: Advanced ARRT certification. Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). AND Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate MUST demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: i. Knowledge of safety requirements for physical space pertaining to MR imaging area. ii. Ability to establish and monitor access and safety requirements for the physical zones. iii. Ability to develop and ensure that adequate written safety procedures, work instructions, emergency procedures, and operating instructions are issued and enforced. iv. Knowledge of hazards posed by magnetic fields on implants, medical devices, hospital equipment and retained foreign bodies, and the development of measures taken against those hazards. v. Ability to train medical, technical, nursing and all other relevant staff groups (including ancillary workers) in all procedural aspects related to MR safety.
