Job Summary: The North Florida/South Georgia VA Healthcare System's, Diagnostic Radiology Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist - Computed Tomography. Major Duties:

  • This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. VA Careers - Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: https://youtube.com/embed/I-4ku5UMvWM Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties include but not are limited to: Receives the patient, properly positions the patient for a wide variety of examinations, makes necessary exposures, and prepares Computed Tomography (CT) suite and equipment. Explain procedures to patients. Identify each patient by asking for two (2) forms of identification. Performs computerized tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest and body with and without the use of contrast materials. Performs a spectrum advanced imaging examinations that includes biopsies, abscess drainages, ablations, cardiac angiography, brain perfusions, and virtual colonography. Performs routine radiology studies to the same high-standards that are required for CT. Possess specific knowledge of cross sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computed tomography. Performs peripheral and visceral CT Angiography of the neurological, cardiovascular, abdominal systems and extremities. These angiographic studies include cerebral, renal, hepatic, mesenteric, aortic, femoral, etc. Performs retrospective reformatted images of CT and angiographic studies when requested or when part of a standard procedure. Maintains proficiency on 3D reconstruction techniques. Ensures that the relationships with management, co-workers, students, patients and others within the organization are consistently courteous, respectful, cooperative in nature, and overall contributes positively to the effective operations of Diagnostic Imaging. Responsible for employing the CT schedule and rescheduling appointments in a manner to optimize scanner times while maintaining flexibility for emergency cases. Registers patients for examinations and updates status as necessary. Performs most exams utilizing surgical sterile techniques that requires preparation of surgical trays. Prepares contrast materials that are used in CT/angiography and other exams. Properly utilizes intracath in gaining access to venous vessel when intravenous contrast is required. Work Schedule: Wednesday to Saturday, 7:00 am - 5:30 pm (Compress work schedule) (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs). Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d) Education Requirement-Documentation Submitted: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Certification Requirement-Documentation Submitted: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include. Computed Tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and has taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on-the-job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met. Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-9 Experience. At least one year of experience at GS-08, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Experience in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic technology services with only occasional oversight or direction for highly complex issue. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): * Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9. Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. This examination is administered by VA Occupational Health. This position requires moderate lifting up to 44 lbs., carrying objects up to 15 lbs., frequent reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, hands and legs, use of cranes and motor vehicles, walking & standing up to 8 hours, bending and climbing and able to hear whisper. The incumbent must be physically, emotionally and mentally stable in order to efficiently perform the essential functions of this position without hazard to themselves or others.
