Title:

DG BOSS: Laboratory Technician (FN)

  • Performs sampling and quality surveillance of DLA capitalized products stored within DFSP DG.
  • Performs fuel sampling and testing to ensure quality fuel within storage systems.
  • Maintains a sample log and track laboratory, sampling, and testing programs within the FMDE program.
  • Conducts fuel sampling and testing as specified by ASTM D-270, Standard Method of Sampling  Petroleum and Petroleum Products; Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards (MPMS), Chapter 8, Section 1; MIL-STD-3004; NAVAIR 00-80T-109, Aircraft Refueling NATOPS Manual; NAVSUP Publication 558, Fuel Management Ashore; and T.O. 42B-1-1, and other military standards.
  • Performs laboratory tests to determine chemical and physical characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials for such purposes as quality control, process control, or product development by performing the following duties.
  • Performs calibration, basic quality checks, and minor troubleshooting of various laboratory equipment.
  • Operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as microscopes, centrifuge, agitators, viscosimeters, chemical balance scales, spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, colorimeters, and other equipment.
  • Tests materials used as ingredients in adhesives, cement, propellants, lubricants, refectories, synthetic rubber, plastics, paint, paper, cloth, and products for such qualities as purity, stability, viscosity, density, absorption, gas chromatograph, and melting or flash point.
  • Tests materials for the presence and content of elements or substances such as hydrocarbons, manganese, natural grease, tungsten, sulfur, cyanide, ash, dust, or impurities.
  • Tests samples of manufactured products to verify conformity to specifications.
  • Records test results on standardized forms and write test reports describing procedures used.
  • Prepares graphs and charts.
  • Cleans and sterilizes laboratory equipment.
  • Prepares chemical solutions according to standard formulas.
  • Adds chemicals or raw materials to process solutions or product batches to correct or establish the formulation required to meet specifications.
  • Performs other jobs as directed.

Basic Qualifications

  • Requires general chemistry lab skills including the use of volumetric glassware and other analytical tools.
  • Good mathematical and mechanical aptitude as well as knowledge of the metric system helpful.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills which enable effective liaison with clients, other departments within the organization, subcontractors, and clients; reports directly to the Asst. and POL Superintendent.
  • Particular attention to detail, and good project management skills.
  • Must pass overseas medical screening and be in good health.
  • Must be contract-oriented and computer literate in Microsoft Office software.

Preferred Qualifications

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:  SPECIAL CERTIFICATION OR TRAINING

  • A registered Chemist or Chemical Engineer is highly desired.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering degree from an accredited university or college.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have at least two (2) years of experience working in a fuel laboratory or analytical laboratory.
