Development Lead

Lincolnshire, IL Full time

The Opportunity

Good Sam is at the heart of the outdoor and RV lifestyle, and our Loyalty program is the engine of our customer engagement. We are looking for a passionate and experienced Technical Lead to take full ownership of the engineering behind our Loyalty applications.

This is a unique, high-impact role with a dual mission: you will be responsible for the stability and enhancement of our current, business-critical loyalty platform while simultaneously architecting and executing the technical roadmap to modernize it. You will be the visionary and the technical authority, guiding a talented team to build a next-generation loyalty experience that is scalable, personalized, and ready for the future.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

1. Current Platform Leadership & Operational Excellence:

  • Lead and mentor a dedicated team of software engineers, fostering a culture of quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Serve as the team's most senior engineer, diving deep into the code to lead by example in troubleshooting, debugging, and solving the most complex technical challenges.

  • Drive technical excellence by personally conducting code reviews, setting high standards for quality, and mentoring engineers on best practices.

  • Ensure the rock-solid stability, performance, and security of our current systems, which are central to daily business operations.

2. Strategic Modernization & Future-State Architecture:

  • Own and Create the Architectural Vision: Personally design and document the technical blueprints for our future loyalty platform using microservices, modern APIs, and real-time data streaming.

  • Develop the Modernization Roadmap: Create, evangelize, and own the multi-year technical roadmap to transition from a legacy architecture to a scalable, cloud-native ecosystem.

  • Lead Innovation and Evaluation: Guide the technical evaluation of new frameworks, tools, and third-party solutions (build vs. buy analysis) to accelerate our modernization goals.

  • Drive Execution: Guide the team in executing the roadmap, breaking down large-scale architectural changes into manageable, iterative phases.

3. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Influence:

  • Partner closely with Product Managers, Marketing, and business stakeholders to translate strategic business goals into a concrete technical strategy.

  • Collaborate with other engineering leaders (across AGMOD, Guidewire, Data, etc.) to ensure seamless integration and alignment across the entire Good Sam technology landscape.

  • Clearly articulate complex architectural designs, risks, and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences.

What We're Looking For (Required Skills & Expertise)

  • A 'Player-Coach' Mentality: A hands-on leader who thrives on being in the code, leading architectural design sessions, and pairing with engineers to solve tough problems.

  • Proven Technical Leadership: 7+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2-3 years in a technical lead or architect role where you remained deeply technical and hands-on.

  • Dual-Stack Expertise:

    • Legacy Systems: Deep, hands-on experience with the Microsoft stack (.NET/C#, SQL Server, T-SQL, Stored Procedures), essential for managing our current environment.

    • Modern Architecture: Proven experience designing and building scalable, cloud-native applications using Java, microservices, REST APIs, and event-driven patterns (Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc.).

  • Cloud Proficiency: Hands-on experience with a major cloud provider, preferably Microsoft Azure (AKS, Azure SQL, Azure DevOps).

  • Pragmatic Problem-Solver: A strong ability to troubleshoot complex issues in a distributed, high-transactional environment, with a knack for balancing short-term fixes with long-term strategic goals.

  • Excellent Communicator: The ability to inspire a team, communicate a technical vision, and work effectively with stakeholders across the entire organization.
