Summary:
The Deputy Metro Editor works with the Executive Editor and other members of the senior leadership team to develop a strategy that ensures the NY Daily News is meeting the needs of its audience. This is a hands-on, high-demand job with a wide range of responsibilities including, but not limited to, managing assigned staffers, directing and editing content, and coordinating with digital and print production teams.
The Deputy Metro Editor, who may work days or nights, must keep a close eye on the competition to make sure the Daily News is tracking ahead of other news outlets in key content areas on an hour-to-hour basis and closely follow reader metrics to assure we are meeting audience demands. As a member of the senior leadership team, the Deputy Metro Editor must have the requisite experience to fill in for the Executive Editor when needed, making major news decisions, decisions on anonymous sources, and other calls usually left to the Editor.
What you will do:
Assign stories and maintain communication with reporters and editors throughout the afternoon and evening to ensure a thorough understanding of what stories are being pursued and that all elements, including photography and digital plans, are considered and accounted for
Aid the Executive Editor in assigning and directing major projects across the newsroom
Work closely with both digital and print production teams, with particular responsibility for working with the print production coordinator and aiding in the proofing and editing of the newspaper as needed
Own the ongoing monitoring of analytics to ensure story choices are resonating with readers
Track competitors and assure the News remains in front on key stories
Edit stories for accuracy, context, organization, clarity, length, and style
Help plan content to ensure that the Daily News offers compelling enterprise and news seven days a week
Exercise strong news judgment
Utilize strong headline writing skills, both digital and print
Leverage SEO to build an audience for our content
Monitor analytics and use them in decision-making
What you will bring:
Newsroom leadership experience, including managing reporters and editors while enabling them to do their best work
Reporting, writing, and editing skills, including knowledge of AP style
A strong grasp of fair use, copyright laws, and media ethics
Knowledge of newsroom budget and digital goals
General understanding of the NY Daily News’ overall structure and goals
Deep grounding in key NYC issues
Proficiency with both print and digital content management systems
5 years of reporting experience at a daily newspaper or similar organization
Familiarity with using content management programs, analytics tools, and other digital resources
5 years of management experience at a daily newspaper or similar organization
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required
Benefits and Compensation:
The salary range is $80,000 - $100,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
