Challenge
We’re looking for a Database Engineer with strong experience in SQL Server and cloud environments (AWS) to support and evolve production database systems.
In this role, you will be part of a lean, high-impact team responsible for maintaining the stability, performance, and reliability of database platforms across production and non-production environments. This is a hands-on role focused on day-to-day operations, incident response, and continuous improvement.
The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in high-responsibility production environments. You should be able to handle multiple priorities, act with urgency when issues arise, and take full ownership of database-related problems from identification to resolution.
This role also offers the opportunity to grow into platform engineering and automation, contributing to a more scalable and modern infrastructure over time.
Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain production and non-production database environments across cloud and hybrid infrastructure.
- Monitor database health, performance, and availability, responding to alerts and incidents in a timely manner.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks including backups, restores, patching, and index optimization.
- Troubleshoot database performance issues related to queries, indexing, locking, and resource utilization.
- Support database provisioning, configuration, and upgrade activities.
- Manage database access, roles, and permissions following security best practices.
- Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to support deployments and incident resolution.
- Use Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) for provisioning and configuration.
- Support CI/CD workflows for database operations using tools like GitLab.
- Document processes, incidents, and configurations to maintain a reliable knowledge base.
- Contribute to automation initiatives to reduce manual work and improve consistency across environments.
Mandatory Skills
- 3–6 years of experience in database administration or database engineering.
- Strong hands-on experience with SQL Server in production environments.
- Solid understanding of backup and recovery strategies, including validation and testing.
- Experience troubleshooting database performance issues (query tuning, indexing, execution plans).
- Experience supporting live production systems with minimal supervision.
- Hands-on experience with AWS, including services like RDS.
- Working knowledge of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
- Experience supporting or integrating with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab preferred).
- Basic scripting skills using PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
- Understanding of high availability, disaster recovery, and database security best practices.
Nice to Have
- Experience with additional databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MariaDB.
- Exposure to MongoDB or Snowflake.
- Experience working in hybrid cloud environments.
- Familiarity with automation and infrastructure standardization practices.
- Experience in high-availability or regulated environments (e.g., SaaS, finance).
- Interest in evolving toward platform engineering or cloud infrastructure roles.
Team & Environment
- Small, highly collaborative 2-person infrastructure team.
- Direct interaction with engineering and cross-functional teams.
- Environment focused on production stability, responsiveness, and ownership.
- No regular on-call rotation, but flexibility is required when incidents arise.
- Opportunity to work on modernization and automation initiatives.
- Fast-paced environment requiring adaptability and strong prioritization skills.
