About the Role
The Database Administrator oversees the full technical lifecycle of enterprise database platforms, ensuring their stability, performance, security, and ongoing development across on premises and cloud environments.
In addition to hands on database administration, the role provides technical leadership, drives architecture and modernization initiatives, and serves as a key escalation point for complex incidents and strategic projects.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Provides senior‑level administration and technical leadership for enterprise database platforms, to ensure high availability, strong performance, and overall resilience.
- Oversees database installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, and full lifecycle management across on‑premises and cloud platforms.
- Administers, monitors, and maintains database systems to ensure they operate securely and at optimal performance levels.
- Designs, implements, and routinely test backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies in line with business RTO/RPO requirements.
- Collaborates with application/infrastructure/architecture teams to support project needs and business requirements.
- Proactively analyses capacity, performance trends, and potential risks; defines and implements tuning and optimization strategies.
- Serves as the escalation point for complex database incidents and major service outages.
- Leads root-cause analysis and drives long-term corrective actions to enhance platform stability and service quality.
- Ensures all database platforms adhere to internal IT and regulatory standards for security, access control, encryption, and auditing.
- Reviews and approves database access models, privilege management, and segregation of duties practices.
- Maintains and enforces database standards, governance frameworks, and operational documentation.
- Partners with architecture, application, and infrastructure teams to design scalable, resilient, and secure database solutions.
- Leads or plays a major role in database architecture refresh initiatives, cloud migrations and modernisation efforts.
- Defines best practices, reusable patterns, and automation opportunities to uplift team capability and improve efficiency.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Shows strong initiative and self‑direction, with a proven ability to collaborate effectively with distributed teams across multiple regions.
- Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or has equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrates strong organisation and discipline, able to work independently with minimal supervision, manage time efficiently, and adjust priorities across multiple ongoing initiatives.
- Possess at least 10 years of relevant IT experience, including a minimum of 8 years of hands‑on database administration in enterprise environments supporting Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL, and Alibaba Cloud RDS. Experience with MongoDB, PostgreSQL, or Sybase ASE is an advantage.
- Holds relevant professional certifications is highly desirable, including Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or Alibaba Cloud Professional.
- Has practical experience with cloud and hybrid database architectures, including solution design, migration, and ongoing operational support.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage and influence both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Fluent in English and Cantonese; proficiency in Mandarin/Putonghua is an added advantage.
