What you'll be doing

As a Database Administrator Apprentice at CIBC, you will support the deployment, maintenance, and optimization of core database platforms across on-premises and cloud environments. You’ll work with experienced DBAs on daily operations, troubleshooting, access management, backup and recovery, performance monitoring, and routine maintenance. You will also contribute to automation, documentation, and process improvements to help ensure the security, availability, and performance of CIBC’s data environment.

CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 2 days per week on-site, while other days may be remote.

How you'll succeed:

  • Database Operations & Support - Assist in the administration, configuration, and maintenance of database platforms across on-premises and cloud environments. Participate in day-to-day monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolution of database issues to support performance, availability, and reliability.
  • Database Implementation - Support the setup, provisioning, and integration of new databases and related components (e.g., instances, schemas, connectivity) for applications and reporting needs. Contribute to basic automation and scripting tasks to streamline routine activities such as deployments, health checks, and maintenance.
  • Technical Skills & Compliance - Work closely with senior database administrators to address operational challenges and ensure adherence to CIBC’s security, regulatory, and compliance standards—particularly around access controls, data protection, auditing, and change management.
  • Documentation & Process Improvement - Help maintain accurate documentation of database procedures, configurations, standards, and runbooks. Participate in efforts to improve operational processes, reduce manual effort, and enhance knowledge sharing within the team.

Who you are

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Entry-level resource with 0-2 years of relevant experience OR Completion of a relevant bootcamp. You bring a basic understanding of financial markets products, services, and industry regulations; familiarity with trading markets terminology and basic data structures. You Works under close supervision; follows established procedures and guidelines; seeks guidance
  • Awareness of common risks and adherence to established risk management
  • Basic understanding of regulatory requirements and compliance policies; adherence to established procedures in daily tasks; partner with Compliance and Audit teams as needed
  • Basic understanding of database concepts (relational design, normalization, indexing, transactions, constraints) and how applications interact with databases
  • Working knowledge of SQL (writing queries, joins, aggregations, troubleshooting slow queries)
  • Familiarity with at least one enterprise database platform (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL) and common administration tasks
  • Exposure to database monitoring and performance tuning (query performance, index/statistics maintenance, capacity planning, identifying bottlenecks/locks)
  • Backup, restore, and recovery fundamentals, including validation/testing
  • Understanding of database security (roles/permissions, least privilege, authentication)
  • Experience or exposure to automation/scripting for routine DBA tasks (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash, SQL scripting)
  • Awareness of change management and operational best practices
  • Digitally savvy and eager to learn new database technologies and cloud-managed data services
  • Effective communicator and collaborative team player, able to work with developers, analysts, and infrastructure partners
  • Detail-oriented and analytical, with strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package.  This role has an expected salary range of $70,000- $75,000 based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position.  The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which also may include a discretionary bonus component.
