S&P Global

Data Steward - Geospatial

UK - TETBURY CIRENCESTER ROAD Full time

About the Role:

Grade Level (for internal use):

10

The Team:

The Enterprise Data Operations (EDO) division is responsible for managing and stewarding high-quality data assets that support S&P Global’s geospatial analytics and decision-making capabilities. As a Data Steward – Geospatial, you will partner with data producers, data owners, and data consumers across EDO to ensure our geospatial datasets are trusted, well-documented, and fit for purpose. You’ll work closely with GIS specialists, data engineers, product partners, and governance stakeholders to strengthen how geospatial data is defined, controlled, and used across the organization.

The Impact:

You will play a key role in enhancing the quality and usability of geospatial data by implementing data governance standards, resolving data issues, and facilitating data lifecycle management. Your stewardship will improve consistency across geospatial products and downstream analytics, reduce operational rework caused by data defects, and increase confidence for internal and external users who rely on accurate spatial information. At this level, you will also help drive a culture of accountability for data quality—proactively identifying risks, aligning stakeholders on standards, and ensuring issues are resolved sustainably.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and maintain geospatial data assets, ensuring compliance with data governance policies and standards.

  • Collaborate with data owners and users to identify, investigate, and resolve data quality issues.

  • Define and enforce data validation rules, metadata standards, and documentation for geospatial datasets.

  • Support data integration and transformation processes to maintain data consistency across platforms.

  • Facilitate communication between technical teams and business stakeholders to align data requirements and expectations.

  • Monitor data quality metrics and produce regular reports to track improvements and identify areas for attention.

  • Assist in the development and delivery of training and guidance materials related to geospatial data stewardship.

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize data management workflows and tools.

  • All employees are required to work from the office a minimum of 2 days per week.

What We’re Looking For:

Basic Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geospatial Science, GIS, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • An S&P Global employee at this level would typically have 5+ years of experience working with geospatial data, including data stewardship, data quality management, or GIS analysis.

  • Strong understanding of geospatial data formats, standards (e.g., OGC), and spatial databases.

  • Experience with GIS software and tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar platforms.

  • Proven ability to analyze and resolve data quality issues and implement data governance practices.

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results under general guidance.

  • We require all candidates who reach the final stage of our interview process to attend at least one in-person interview, which is ordinarily at your nearest S&P Global office. This must be completed before we can proceed to an offer.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with scripting or programming languages such as Python or SQL for geospatial data processing.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based geospatial data platforms and services (e.g., AWS, Azure).

  • Knowledge of data governance frameworks and tools.

  • Experience working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with cross-functional teams.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to continuous improvement.

  • Experience helping define or improve team-level standards (e.g., metadata completeness, validation rules, or issue management workflows) and embedding them into operational practice.
