The Position

A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Roche.

In Roche’s Research and Early Development organisations, we make transformative medicines for patients to tackle some of the world’s toughest unmet healthcare needs. We are united by our mission to transform science into medicines. Together, we create a culture defined by curiosity, responsibility, and humility, where our talented people are empowered and inspired to bring forward extraordinary, life-changing innovation at speed.

The Computational Sciences Centre of Excellence (CoE) is a global organisation enabling Roche’s Research and Early Development units (pRED and gRED) to become more data-driven, more digitally adept, and better prepared for the challenges of the future. Within the CoE, Computational Medicine focuses on developing and applying innovative data analysis solutions to support clinical development — furthering our understanding of disease, disease progression, and individual patient response to treatment. In partnership with our scientists across pRED and gRED, we create better medicines by augmenting every part of R&D through our data-driven culture.

As a Data Scientist in Sensor Data Analytics you will work to ensure that pRED and gRED clinical development are enabled with world leading sensor data analytics capabilities. You will leverage your analytics skills to develop and apply sensor-based digital endpoints, including digital clinical outcome assessments, digital biomarkers and exploratory digital measures collected from wearables, smartphones and other patient monitoring technologies. You will also integrate sensor data with other modalities such as clinical, imaging, and omics data. You will be part of a team of experts located in Basel and South San Francisco and report to the Sensor Data Insights group lead in the Computational Biology and Medicine department.

The Opportunity:

  • Co-create the sensor-based data collection, analysis and digital endpoint development strategies for clinical drug development programs and therapy areas, and drive the implementation from a sensor data analytics perspective

  • Devise and implement science and methodology development strategies using established and novel sensor data processing and statistical methodologies accompanied by state-of-the-art machine learning and artificial intelligence approaches

  • Collaborate with stakeholders in clinical drug programs, with Roche-internal functions and external partners, and with a wide range of data scientists, researchers, clinicians and internal IT specialists

  • Provide guidance for others within your domain of expertise, explore novel data sets, and proactively identify, assess, and internalize promising methods and tools

Who You Are:

  • You hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Life Sciences, Computer Science, Informatics, Statistics, or a related field, coupled with substantial experience in the pharmaceutical and digital health sectors.

  • With a wealth of professional experience, you're adept at delving into sensor data across diverse domains, like biomechanics, vital signs, audio, and cognitive tests. Your proficiency in feature engineering, algorithm development, and statistical analysis ensures meticulous measurement validation and insightful longitudinal modeling.

  • Your expertise extends seamlessly into the application of these measures in drug development programs, where you navigate PhI-IV trials and various endpoint types, all while wielding a deep understanding of relevant disease areas e.g. cardiovascular, renal and metabolism, respiratory, etc.

  • You have proven project management skills and resilience. Your ability to foster lasting partnerships with stakeholders drives innovation in drug development.

  • You are curious and comfortable in a dynamic environment and embrace challenges to expand your expertise. Your proactive and creative approach enables you to drive initiatives and skillfully navigate complex issues, always keeping the needs of customers at the forefront.

  • Your outstanding presentation and communication skills in English are central and effortlessly foster collaboration and unity across diverse teams.
