State Street

Data Platform Software Engineering Principal, State Street Investment Management, Vice President

Krakow, Poland Full time

Role Summary

State Street Investment Management’s Data, Analytics & AI Services (DAAIS) team is seeking a Software Engineering Principal (Vice President) for its Data Platform at our Krakow, Poland office. This role is accountable for the software engineering aspects of the data platform—building and operating backend services, APIs and microservices, containerized/cloud-native components, and migration frameworks/utilities that enable Snowflake and Databricks workloads on AWS or Azure. The successful candidate will bring deep, hands-on expertise in large-scale distributed systems and will be responsible for the end-to-end design, build, and operate lifecycle of low-latency, resilient, complex software solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hands-on design and delivery of core backend services (APIs, microservices, orchestration/workflow, metadata/access services), including writing and reviewing production code for critical paths.
  • Architect large-scale, distributed components on AWS/Azure (compute, networking, storage) with a focus on low latency, resiliency, scalability, and clear service boundaries.
  • Own operations of the software solutions, including on-call and incident response, backfills, post-incident reviews, and reliability improvements.
  • Build and operate migration frameworks/utilities for Snowflake and Databricks (bulk load/unload, schema evolution, reconciliation, backfills, cutover automation) with strong validation, observability, rollback, and replayability.
  • Engineer security-by-design for services and tooling: authentication/authorization, secrets management, encryption/KMS, network controls, and integration with Snowflake/Databricks access models (e.g., Unity Catalog) with audit-ready logging.
  • Design and deliver low-latency, event-driven integration patterns (Kafka/Kinesis/Event Hubs) with replay, idempotency, schema management, and resilient failure handling.
  • Deliver internal tools and developer experience enablers (admin/onboarding tools, diagnostics dashboards, SDKs/CLIs, client libraries, templates) to simplify integration, improve productivity, and reduce operational toil.
  • Help lead agile delivery (standups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, retrospectives) and continuously improve engineering practices; leverage AI-assisted tools and internal agents/automations to accelerate the SDLC and raise quality.
  • Accountable for the software engineering aspects of the Data Platform: set engineering direction and standards for platform services, partnering with Data Engineering/Analytics leaders on priorities and adoption.
  • Build and lead a software engineering pod; hire, coach, and develop technical leaders to deliver with engineering and operational excellence. Own team performance management, including professional development and performance reviews.

Required Qualifications

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience delivering large-scale, distributed systems; BS/MS in Computer Science/Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong object-oriented design skills, including design patterns, SOLID principles, and modern engineering best practices.
  • Strong proficiency in Java (preferred) and/or Python, building scalable, high-performance services.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and operating microservices and APIs (REST, RPC, gRPC, OpenAPI), including backward compatibility and resilience.
  • Hands-on cloud-native experience on AWS and/or Azure, including service deployments that integrate with Snowflake and Databricks.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CloudFormation/Bicep).
  • Experience building event-driven systems using messaging/streaming platforms (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, Event Hubs, Flink).
  • Observability and production operations experience: logging/metrics/tracing (OpenTelemetry/Prometheus/Grafana), on-call, and incident response practices.
  • Strong SDLC execution: CI/CD, automated testing, and secure-by-default engineering practices.
  • Strong communication and influence skills, including experience leading within a pod/team (coaching, performance feedback) and collaborating effectively with engineering and business stakeholders.
  • Strong proficiency in Java (preferred) and/or Python, building scalable, high-performance services.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and operating microservices and APIs (REST, RPC, gRPC, OpenAPI), including reliability and backward compatibility concerns.
  • Hands-on cloud-native experience on AWS and/or Azure, building services that integrate with Snowflake and Databricks.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CloudFormation/Bicep).
  • Event-driven systems experience using messaging/streaming platforms (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, Event Hubs, Flink).
  • Observability experience (logging/metrics/tracing) with tools such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Grafana.
  • Strong SDLC and DevOps practices: CI/CD, automated testing, secure-by-default development, and production support/on-call.
  • Ability to influence and lead within a pod/team (coaching, performance feedback) and communicate effectively with engineering and business stakeholders; practical use of AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g., Copilot) is a plus.

This role requires office presence on a weekly basis (4 days).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience delivering AI-assisted SDLC initiatives (e.g., Copilot/Claude Code), including secure usage guidelines and measurable improvements in velocity and quality.
  • Experience building internal developer agents/automations that streamline integrations and engineering operations (e.g., migration assistants, release/runbook generators, incident triage support) with guardrails and human-in-the-loop workflows.
  • Familiarity with AI governance in regulated environments and experience operationalizing AI engineering tools (enablement, quality gates, adoption measurement) and integrating them into CI/CD workflows.
