Summary

The Data Modeler is responsible for ensuring the organization’s strategic goals are optimized through the models and designs that detail the structure of data within the enterprise data infrastructure. Guides the organization’s data-related efforts, champions the use of technology in the data encompassing all aspects of data management and movement, modeling at all levels to include conceptual, logical, and physical.

Job Description

Works with data architects and data engineers to model data, translating business rules into usable conceptual, logical and physical models and database designs. Designs detailed data representations applying normalization techniques, star schemas and dimensional modeling and generates Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) to ensure accuracy, integrity, quality and understanding to enable long-term scalability. Assumes responsibility for the detailed data models, which includes reviewing and approval of changes to ensure a consistent and high-quality set of models. Assists with the establishment of enterprise-wide data Model principles and standards to ensure alignment with the overall Technology Solutions (TS) architecture principles set by the Architecture COE team. Facilitates highly effective technical team discussions by acting as a leader and mediator between the data engineers and business users to meet the data Modeling needs of the organization. Participates in the development of corporate healthcare-based data models to facilitate efficiency and effective use of the data. Consults with the principal data architects on data architecture related concerns and directions while providing input based on data Model issues and solutions. Establishes an organizational discipline within various applications and business areas to ensure information is effectively captured for data pipeline management. Proposes appropriate model changes to the enterprise data architecture to keep pace with industry and organizational developments. Communicates through mentorship on data modeling techniques and knowledge to the appropriate areas to effectively leverage and incorporate into business processes across the organization. Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions. Build and optimize data models for Snowflake, Redshift or other similar DB platforms.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required in computer science, management information systems, or related field.

Minimum of two years of experience in data modeling, database design and development, systems or applications development, or related field. Must be proficient in data modeling tools such as Erwin, ER/Studio, PowerDesigner, or other similar tools. Proficiency with SQL, strong understanding of data pipeline and data warehousing principles and concepts is required. Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Experience in data modeling and design within the health insurance or health care industry is preferred. Experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud) and healthcare analytics platforms (e.g., Epic Caboodle). Understanding of data lake and lakehouse architectures.
