Howden UK&I – About Us

Howden UK&I is a leading insurance broker serving clients across a wide range of personal and commercial lines. We operate within a people‑first, advisory‑led model that blends deep sector expertise with data‑driven insight. As part of a global insurance group, we work with insurers across the market to secure competitive, tailored solutions for our clients. Data plays a central role in how we evaluate risk, understand customer behaviour, support trading performance, and enhance the experience of both clients and partners.

About the Role

This role sits within the Howden UK&I Data Science & Analytics team, which is responsible for delivering advanced analytical insights and modelling capability across the business. You’ll be working directly on data science and analytics projects supported by, but distinct from, our specialist Data Engineering and Data Visualisation teams who build and maintain our data platforms and reporting infrastructure.

From the outset, you’ll contribute to analytical and modelling work that supports our core business pillars, working on projects that span areas such as growth strategy, trading performance, risk insights, customer behaviour, distribution, and operational efficiency. You will collaborate with teams including insurer relations, marketing, and other central functions, helping them solve problems and make decisions using data. This is a hands‑on role well‑suited to someone who is technically strong, eager to learn, and excited by the breadth of data opportunities in the insurance market.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work on analytical and modelling projects that support Howden UK&I’s core business pillars.
  • Manipulate, analyse, and interpret large datasets to uncover insights and support commercial and operational decision‑making.
  • Build and refine analytical tools, statistical models, or predictive models depending on project needs.
  • Collaborate with teams such as insurer relations, marketing, and other central functions to understand challenges and translate them into data‑driven solutions.
  • Communicate insights clearly to colleagues across the organisation, turning complex findings into actionable recommendations.
  • Contribute to improving analytical methods, processes, and model performance over time.
  • Work closely with Data Engineering and Data Visualisation colleagues to ensure analyses and models are delivered effectively into the wider business.

Key Skills & Experience

Must‑haves:

  • Strong technical background with an ability to write SQL and/or Python — confident in at least one, ideally both.
  • Ability to hit the ground running in a hands‑on analytical environment.
  • A desire to learn about a wide range of insurance products and how data supports underwriting, pricing, distribution, and operations.
  • Good understanding of data science and analytics techniques, such as statistical analysis, exploratory data analysis, regression/modelling concepts, or similar.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across different teams and functions.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to make data understandable to non‑technical audiences.

Beneficial:

  • A degree in data science, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or another quantitative field.
  • Familiarity with common data science or analytics tools (e.g., Python libraries, SQL environments, Databricks, Power BI).
  • An interest in applying technical skills within the insurance domain.

What do we offer in return?

A career that you define. At Howden, we value diversity – there is no one Howden type. Instead, we’re looking for individuals who share the same values as us:

  • Our successes have all come from someone brave enough to try something new

  • We support each other in the small everyday moments and the bigger challenges

  • We are determined to make a positive difference at work and beyond
