RBC

Data Engineer

London, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Full time

Job Description

What is the opportunity?

IT Engineering is seeking a curious and driven Junior Data Engineer to join our in-house Data Development team. As part of this collaborative group, you’ll play a key role in modernizing our technology stack, including the migration to Snowflake. We value proactive learners who ask questions, experiment with new ideas, and continuously seek to improve systems and processes. This role offers structured mentorship and hands-on experience to help you grow into a future technical leader.

RBC’s expectation is that all employees and contractors will work in the office with some flexibility to work up to 1 day per week remotely, depending on working arrangements.

What will you do?

  • Support the performance and stability of the on-premises SQL Server Enterprise Data Warehouse, with a focus on identifying opportunities for optimization.
  • Assist in investigating data pipeline issues, bringing a problem-solving mindset to root cause analysis.
  • Participate in pull request reviews, applying your natural curiosity to learn from senior engineers and contribute fresh perspectives.
  • Collaborate across teams to deliver projects, including the Snowflake migration, while adapting to evolving technical challenges.
  • Shadow senior colleagues in the development team and work with stakeholders through gradual direct interaction, demonstrating clear communication and a drive to understand business needs.
  • Automate tasks within our DevOps pipeline (e.g., Azure DevOps, Git), embracing efficiency and innovation.
  • Actively contribute to mentorship programs, technical learning sessions, and team knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Document processes and solutions, with a focus on continuous improvement.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Growth mindset: A proven drive to learn, improve, and adapt in a rapidly evolving technical landscape.
  • Curiosity and initiative: Eagerness to experiment with new tools (e.g., Snowflake, cloud technologies), ask insightful questions, and propose innovative solutions.
  • Problem-solving resilience: Ability to tackle challenges with tenacity and view setbacks as opportunities to grow.
  • Collaborative spirit: Strong teamwork skills and a willingness to share knowledge and learn from others.
  • Proactive communication: Comfort in engaging with technical and non-technical stakeholders to drive outcomes.

Nice-to-have

  • Exposure to cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks) or enthusiasm for mastering them.
  • Interest in DevOps practices, automation, or infrastructure-as-code tools.
  • Curiosity about financial markets or securities, with a desire to build domain expertise.
  • Familiarity with Agile frameworks (Scrum/Kanban) and a commitment to iterative improvement.

What is in it for you?

We thrive on the challenge to be our best - progressive thinking to keep growing and working together to deliver trusted advice to help our clients thrive and communities prosper.  We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.

  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses, flexible benefits and competitive compensation.

  • Leaders who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities.

  • Opportunities to work with the best in the field.

  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact.

  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team.
