Cytogenetic Technologist

Work Schedule:

M-F variable day shift

Prepares and analyzes specimens for cytogenetic testing. Assists in wet lab duties, including all phases of the cytogenetic diagnostic established protocols.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Works independently and collaboratively and communicates effectively with other healthcare professionals.
  • Identifies, prepares and processes tissue and body fluid specimens according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) with minimal technical error and supervision.
  • Processes tissues and bodily fluid utilizing techniques according to departmental SOP’s.
  • Analysis: Capable of performing analysis for FISH and/or Chromosome analysis and chromosome microarray (CMA) if needed.
  • Prioritizes/reorganizes work to respond to workload and/or STAT requests.
  • Recognizes and corrects instrument malfunctions within the scope of the operations manual and records troubleshooting activities.
  • Conducts established quality control and performance improvement activities like reagent lot to lot, continuous Quality Control.
  • Participates in validation projects from time to time and managing the data.
  • Provides clinical orientation and/or training of new employees/students.
  • Participates in continuing education programs and proficiency testing.
  • Participates in inventory management whenever needed.
  • Possesses knowledge and skill for all types of pathology tissues.
  • Functions appropriately for on-call demands.
  • Reviews and updates current SOP

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

BS degree with a major in biological science/chemistry by meeting CLIA 88 personnel requirements AND completion of a NAACLS accredited cytogenetics education program OR two years of full time training in a cytogenetics laboratory with associate degree.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Math Ability:

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills:

Word processing, Spreadsheets, E-mail, Laboratory Information Systems

Certificates and Licenses:

Certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals required (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc).
