Work Environment & Location

This vacancy is listed for Lena Archuleta Branch, however, Denver Public Library operates across multiple branches, and to meet evolving operational needs, employees may be assigned to work at different locations. This flexibility helps us best serve our customers and optimize our resources. 

DPL employees may be redeployed to work in other locations or capacities to support core functions of the library system during branch closures or other emergencies. 

About Our Branch

The 28th location of the Denver Public Library is located in the Westwood Neighborhood. The 6000 square feet library will be part of a large community center operated by Lifespan Local. The Historical Westwood Neighborhood is located on the west side of Denver and has a diverse population of predominantly Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. DPL will be collaborating with Denver's multicultural and nonprofit community to create equitable opportunities for learning, discovery, and connection. This new location will be a distinctive library setting with a blend of our Cultural Inclusivity and Early Learning services. Multilingual staff will be available to assist customers with language learning skills, immigration resources, computer skills, childhood development and provide an opportunity to celebrate cultures. The library will be a flexible space where adults, young children, and families can be active in their individual and collective learning and development. The library’s teams will collaborate in providing intergenerational, culturally responsive, welcoming spaces and services for families and service providers to connect and spend time.

About Our Position

DPL is hiring a Custodian to help us achieve our goal of providing welcoming spaces to everyone. This position will work at a variety of the 28 Library locations supporting the goal of customer service by ensuring that the library environment is clean, safe and prepared for customer and staff use. Responsibilities include routine manual work involving custodial duties, moving furniture in Library buildings, snow removal and some outdoor landscaping duties.

  • Performs interior custodial duties including mopping, dusting, and vacuuming and uses mechanical floor cleaners to polish, buff, strip, and wax floors.

  • Performs exterior custodial/maintenance duties including snow removal, mowing lawns, pulling weeds, watering plants and lawns, raking leaves, picking up litter, and clearing dumpster areas and operates light machinery powered by small engines as necessary.

  • Removes waste and soiled linens from the work area and gathers and disposes of trash and waste which may contain hazardous materials.

  • Cleans and disinfects all fixtures, floors, mirrors, windows, doors, and walls including those in kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, locker rooms, weight rooms, holding cells, and other work areas and restocks supplies as needed.

What You Would Bring

  • Knowledge of cleaning materials and the operation of custodial equipment.

  • Ability to perform routine and repetitive manual tasks for extended periods.

  • Ability to work in a physically demanding position with continuous bending, kneeling, and lifting of objects that can weigh up to 25-50 pounds.

  • Ability to follow simple written or oral instructions.

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability or willingness to learn to use basic workplace technology including email and internet.

  • Ability to pass a physical examination and a background check after the offer to hire has been made.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalency.

Substitutions:

  • One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A current Colorado driver's license with a good driving record.

  • One-year of work experience in cleaning or janitorial services
