Description:

The Clinical Care Educator at Saint Joseph Health System promotes quality through education and development with emphasis on patients, families, and/or caregivers. Job responsibilities may vary according to assigned area. They maintain a working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, the Organizational Integrity Program, including the Guiding Behaviors, Standards of Conduct, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures ensuring adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behaviors. Job responsibilities:

  • Actively demonstrates the organization’s mission and core values and conducts oneself at all times in a manner consistent with these values.
  • Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information.
  • Collects pertinent data related to the educational needs of nursing staff and patients/families.
  • Analyzes assessment data to determine target audiences and learner needs.
  • Identifies content experts to assist in development of programs to facilitate educational objectives.
  • Documents patient/family education, outcomes and/or evaluations with the healthcare team and/or appropriate planning committees.
  • Responsible for facilitating the development of clinical excellence in critical care areas (ICU, SICU, PCU and ED) through active participation in orientation, critical care training, on-going staff development and evaluation of clinical practice for all levels of personnel and patient/family education.
  • Individualizes, plans, implements and evaluates new associates’ unit orientation.
  • Participates in the development of formal and informal education programs and activities in an effort to improve standards and performance expectations.
  • Responsible for the coordination of all phases of orientation for new nursing employees, and for planning, implementing and evaluating in-service and continuing education programs on an on-going basis which are designed to meet educational needs.
  • Knowledgeable of trends in nursing practice and care delivery and facilitates the process for learners to assume responsibility for maintaining competence in practice.
  • Utilizes principles of education and adult learning to provide opportunities and experiences for professional growth consistent with the Novice to Expert continuum.
  • Utilizes the process of systematic inquiry to develop educational activities.
  • Contributes educational expertise to facilitate and enhance achievement of individual, departmental, and organizational goals.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of leadership principles and management skills. Communicates effectively. Maintains knowledge of national and local trends in nursing practice.
  • Integrates published research and current literature to develop and implement learning activities. Contributes to the research process and participates in hospital based research. Provides learning opportunities which enable nurses to utilize research findings in practice.
  • Participates in education-focused systematic inquiry on topics such as health care outcomes, issues, concepts, theories and the learning process.
  • Collaborates with hospital managers and staff to assess the learning needs and competency gaps.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates educational plans/programs.
  • Facilitates a variety of learning experiences using a range of instructional methods.
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of healthcare standards and regulations in order to meet related training needs.
  • Participates in the organization's compliance with mandatory training requirements.
  • Utilizes methods, measurements and tools to evaluate achievement of learning goals.
  • Serves as a consultant for staff in areas of program development, clinical practice and professional development.
  • Participates in the coordination and continuity of critical care orientation program.
  • Serves as an active member of committees as needed.
  • Demonstrates strong knowledge of standards and regulations related to clinical staff development and patient education.
  • Researches and recommends the purchase of educational materials and equipment as requested.
  • Coordinates and/or collaborates with external learning institutions as they utilize the hospital as a clinical teaching site within department.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as workload or staffing variations require.

Requirements:

Education: Master's in Nursing Education, or MSN.

Licensure: RN Indiana License. Board eligible upon hire or within 12 months. Obtain nursing certification through ANCC within 18 months of hire.

Experience: 3-5 years previous experience in critical care – Emergency department, critical care step down unit, intensive care unit or surgical ICU.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Strong written/verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training, design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups for the measurement of training effects.
  • Knowledge of human behavior and performance.
  • Assigned hours within your shift, starting time, or days of work are subject to change based on departmental and/or organizational needs.
