We are ready to take this game to the next level and need someone passionate to support the organization’s GAME ON strategy and work in a dynamic environment. The CPA Student will participate in OLG’s CPA training program rotating over a 30-month period between External Reporting (18-month rotation) and the choice of either 1) Financial Planning and Analysis (12-month rotation) or Internal Audit (12-month rotation) to gain the necessary practical experience requirements required by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario. 

 

YOUR ROLE IN THE GAME 

 

The CPA Student will join numerous teams comprised of deep subject matter experts, contributing their knowledge and skills towards the achievement of departmental and divisional priorities.  

 

External Reporting (18-month rotation) 

  • Understand the differing financial reporting needs of external stakeholders (Province of Ontario, Charities, Municipalities, and Regulators) and compliance with current and future financial reporting standards (i.e., IFRS) and assess how they are presented and disclosed on the financial statements.   

  • Prepare non-routine and/or complex journal entries and advise on accounting policy using IFRS standards.  Deliver presentations, memos, and working papers on accounting issues with recommendations for technical treatment.  

  • Collaborate in the preparation of OLG's quarterly and annual consolidated external financial statements and prepare/analyze sections of the consolidated financial statements, annual note disclosures, annual reports and MD&A with extensive exposure to various lines of business and executives.    

  • Liaise with the external financial statement auditors (both Financial and Technology teams) in coordinating deliverables, preparing working papers and otherwise supporting the engagement.  

  • Interpret and analyze financial statements: ratios and trend analysis based on timing and financial statement presentation, including consideration for interrelationships between the statements.  Prepare quarterly Balance Sheet commentary and explanation of changes, cash flow analysis and reporting for business leaders. 

 

And one of the following areas for a 12-month rotation: 

 

FP&A (12-month rotation) 

  • On a monthly/quarterly basis, identify revenue and expense variances to in-year forecasts and annual budget and provide foresight into trends and opportunities.  

  • Analyze certain line of business costs based on comparative information (industry, other lines of business, etc.) to identify opportunities for cost reduction. Provide recommendations to FP&A Management and assist FP&A in presenting opportunities to business leaders, as appropriate.    

  • Design and maintain accurate financial models used to facilitate and verify the compilation and upload of forecasts and budgets in D365; explain information requirements to other stakeholders within OLG based on the understanding of differing information needs.  

  • Assess the reasonableness of forecasts/budgets gathered from stakeholders and challenge the assumptions used, as appropriate 

  • Evaluate inputs for the periodic re-forecast and annual budget process ensuring it is accurate and identifying any gaps in the supporting information; using the information supplied, prepare the financial re-forecast and budget, analyze actual results against the budget and re-forecast P&Ls, graphs and tables to facilitate FP&A Management’s discussion.    

  • Assist with preparation of monthly results, forecast, and annual business plan presentations to senior management  

  • Design and maintain accurate dashboards used for proceeds and expense tracking (weekly, monthly, re-forecast and budget). 

OR 

Internal Audit (12-month rotation) 

  • Analyze management reports and information requirements to proactively identify emerging risks to the business. Leverage this information to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of existing business processes.  

  • Work with Senior Audit Managers and Audit Directors to facilitate the execution of internal audit engagements to meet the assurance needs of the organization and ensure compliance with regulatory obligations. 

  • Evaluate the impact and likelihood of risk events and use this information to determine the most efficient and effective test procedures to achieve sufficient testing coverage. 

  • Execute assigned test plans and assist in developing audit reports for internal and external stakeholders ensuring that audit working papers are prepared in accordance with IIA standards.  

  • Evaluate and provide recommendations to management to ensure design and operating effectiveness of operations, compliance, IT general, and IT application controls.  

  • Participate in the enhancement of existing audit methodologies by supporting the development of divisional practice guidance, tools, and templates.  

 

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE GAME 

  • Completion of a University degree in finance, accounting, business or a related field 

  • Eligible for enrollment into the CPA Program (Student membership and requirements met for CPA PEP enrollment) by the hire start date 

  • Experience with Office 365, in particular Excel, Power BI and PowerPoint and other tools that support financial processes (ERPs, Data Lakes, and Workflow tools)  

  • Experience in financial modeling an asset   

  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills and able to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail   

  • Communication skills to convey complex financial information clearly and concisely to a non-technical audience.   

  • Process management skills and able to challenge status quo and drive continuous improvement
