  • MSW degree or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of demonstrated practice or research experience in examining how migration’s social, economic, political, legal, and cultural aspects shape lives of those migrating voluntarily or involuntarily.

Demonstrated practical application of, and/or teaching/research experience in, the following areas:

  • Policy implications of internal migration and Canadian immigration policy, history, and the evolving response to refugees and immigrants.
  • Theory-grounded practice with migration-shaped population, including such topics as: internal migration, multiple conceptualizations of “refugee” and “immigrant”; the international experience before arrival in Canada; cultural adjustment and culture shock; traumatic stress; and issues facing particular groups. Intersecting social locations of status, ethnicity, gender, class, age, religious affiliation and differential ability.
  • Role that social workers can play in the fight against anti-immigrant policies, sanctions, and discriminatory practices – including through the support of autonomous migrant organizing.
  • Key international social, political and economic factors that lead people to leave their homes and migrate.
  • Expert knowledge of the skills required to serve migration-shaped populations in an appropriate and responsive way in various social work practice settings.
  • Historical development and current dynamics of immigration in Canada.
  • Historical context of migration, current immigration policies, intersection between stages of migration and social work practice, and migration-generating contexts and subsequent international and Canadian responses.
  • How cultural values, beliefs, and attitudes influence practice in general and work with migration-shaped populations in particular.
  • The unique needs of migration-shaped populations from cultural, economic, psychosocial, and legal perspectives.
  • The ways in which immigration policies, programs and service delivery affect and shape experiences and well-being.
  • Intergenerational issues facing migration-shaped families.
  • Knowledge of the various social injustice, prejudice, racism, and discrimination issues encountered by members of certain immigrant/refugee groups.
  • Community, state and national resources especially designed to assist migration-shaped populations and knowledge of periodicals, databases, websites, and other resources designed to help professionals working with refugees.
