Role Overview: Counsel, Operating Businesses
Irvine, CA or Arlington, VA | In office, Monday – Friday
CoStar Group is seeking a highly motivated, adaptable, and business‑minded Counsel, Operating Businesses to join its Legal Department.
This role is designed for an attorney who thrives in a fast‑paced, high‑volume commercial environment and is interested not only in day‑to‑day contract negotiation, but also in how legal services are delivered at scale. The successful candidate will serve as a trusted legal partner to CoStar’s operating businesses—supporting commercial transactions, advising brand leaders, and helping modernize contracting processes through improved workflows, templates, automation, AI, and other tools.
Reporting to the Division General Counsel, Operating Businesses, this position supports the legal needs of CoStar Group’s operating businesses across sales, procurement, product, marketing, and operations. In addition to drafting and negotiating agreements, the role plays a central part in intake management, workflow prioritization, and continuous improvement of contracting processes.
The ideal candidate brings strong commercial judgment, an operational mindset, and a desire to partner with the business on both execution and strategy.
Key Responsibilities
Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements.
Support general corporate legal matters, including collaborating on special projects related to M&A, product development, piracy, and regulatory compliance.
Provide practical, risk‑based guidance to internal stakeholders.
Manage day‑to‑day intake and workflow for contract and legal requests from internal teams and external customers.
Help prioritize matters in a high‑volume environment, balancing speed, risk, and business objectives.
Create, maintain, and distribute template agreements, playbooks, and standard addenda for scalable use across the company.
Identify and implement better ways of working to reduce friction, improve turnaround times, and drive adoption of improved legal processes across the operating businesses.
Leverage AI tools, automation, and other technologies to improve contract review, drafting, issue spotting, and knowledge management.
Serve as a legal advisor to brand and business leaders, supporting strategy, growth initiatives, and operational decision‑making.
Participate in discussions around new products, partnerships, and go‑to‑market initiatives.
Contribute ideas and perspectives on how legal can better enable growth while managing risk.
Basic Qualifications
J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar membership in good standing.
5-10 years of experience; some in-house experience preferred.
Bachelor's degree required from an accredited, not-for-profit, in-person college/university.
A track record of commitment to prior employers.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with, or understanding of, real estate will be considered helpful.

Pay Transparency
This position offers an annual base salary range of $143,000 minimum - $200,000 maximum plus bonus opportunity based on relevant skills and experience and includes a generous benefits plan.
