Job Overview

General Motors (GM) seeks an experienced environmental attorney with excellent judgment and personal integrity to join its Legal Staff. This role provides critical advice and counsel on mobile emissions and fuel economy matters and reports to the Lead Counsel for the Environmental practice area.
 

In this position, you’ll be a key business partner contributing to GM’s success by combining both legal and business expertise and understanding GM’s product, operations, and strategic goals. You must be a mature attorney who can provide a big-picture perspective while maintaining a hands-on role. You’ll manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively across internal functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise GM engineers, technical staff, government relations/public policy staff, and management on mobile source laws and regulations, including but not limited to Title II of the Clean Air Act and the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act;
  • Represent GM before federal and state authorities, agencies, administrative tribunals, and courts in environmental and regulatory matters;
  • Work closely with clients on internal compliance and strategy committees;
  • Review proposed laws and regulations, and assist in drafting GM/industry comments and lobbying efforts;
  • Support GM participation in trade association matters;
  • Draft, review, and negotiate legal agreements;
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant laws and regulations and regulatory agency policies and guidelines.


Qualifications

Required:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school with strong academic credentials;
  • Licensed to practice law as in-house counsel in Michigan or eligible for reciprocal admission;
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of law firm, in-house, and/or government experience, with experience in environmental matters;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of internal stakeholders and colleagues, outside counsel, and regulators;
  • Ability to collaborate within a variety of legal groups and business functions and to demonstrate leadership through teamwork; and
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.


Nice to Have:

  • Experience in automotive mobile source environmental matters.
  • Experience in stationary air, water, and waste regulatory matters.
  • Experience with sustainability and climate change matters.

  • Ability to use MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and other applications and stay highly organized.


 

Location: This role is based remotely but if you live within a 50-mile radius of (Atlanta, Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford or Mountain View), you are expected to report to that location three times a week, at minimum.

Compensation:

The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws.

The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position, as well as geography of the selected candidate.

  • The salary range for this role is $158,500 - $242,900. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.

  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
