The new york times

Correspondent, Business & Economics - APAC

Hong Kong, China; Seoul, Korea; Singapore Full Time

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is looking for a talented, experienced and versatile reporter to join our Business team to cover business and economics in Asia. This job focuses on companies, economics, trade and markets across Asia. China plays an outsize part of the beat because of its centrality to the region and the global economy. The mandate is to produce a fulsome body of news and enterprise articles – while contributing to video and graphics-led stories, newsletters and audio – that reveal and explain the biggest storylines on the beat.

We are looking for an energetic and determined journalist who loves beat reporting and thrives when competing on the most compelling and important storylines. The starting point for this coverage is Asia but we put a heavy emphasis on stories that make wider connections, and you will work closely with other correspondents around the world. You will write news, second-day stories, analysis, explainers and enterprise. You will collaborate across multiple desks and teams including International, Breaking News, Video and Graphics. You will write articles, Live updates, contribute to newsletters and videos and participate in collaborative reporting projects.

This role will be based in the APAC region; the location of the role will be discussed with the recruiter during the interview process. The role will report to the Asia Business Editor.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Follow news, events and cultural trends on your beat to determine, in conjunction with your colleagues and editors, themes worthy of coverage as breaking news, day news or as enterprise.
  • Must be as comfortable and enthusiastic reacting to immediate breaking news as you are writing thoughtfully and deeply about events and issues.
  • Write medium- and long-term enterprise and the occasional feature.
  • Deliver scoops and exclusive news.
  • Contribute to and sometimes be the lead correspondent on live briefings, writing briefing-length stories, joining planning meetings and providing live coverage.
  • Build a network of sources that will inform rich and original reports, news and features.
  • Cover news accurately and efficiently; maintain and cultivate news sources and contacts; obtain information through interviews, observations and research.
  • Present facts and analysis in clear written form and in conformity with Times style, length and other requirements, and developing high-impact stories from the broader themes that underpin incremental news developments.
  • Write on deadline; receive and react to feedback and edits.
  • Collaborate closely and regularly with reporter-researchers who are partners in reporting, translation and story scouting.
  • Commit to The New York Times’s strategy, ethics, standards and mission for both themselves, their team, stringers and colleagues.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Our ideal candidate has:

  • A bottomless curiosity about the world and a love of news and storytelling
  • A self-evident commitment to the power of tough and fair reporting
  • An ability to produce stories that are crisply written and well organized, framed to draw in busy, scrolling readers and delivered in language that is accessible
  • A striving passion for professional development and the ability to learn from everyone around them
  • A collaborative, genuine and independent spirit that takes satisfaction in not only their own growth but the success of their team and colleagues
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in reporting roles.

The closing date for applications is Friday March 13, 2026. In order to be considered, please submit your resume, cover letter, and links to your top 5-7 clips.
