Position Summary

The Director of Health and Safety supports the VP of EHSS and provides enterprise‑level leadership for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Carpenter Technology Corporation’s Health and Safety strategy, programs, and performance targets. This role ensures full compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations while advancing a proactive, risk‑based, and people‑centered safety culture across the organization.

Serving as the primary Health and Safety subject matter expert for the VP of EHSS, the Director partners closely with business leaders, site leadership, and EHSS professionals to embed safety into all aspects of operations and drive sustainable, long‑term performance improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight for corporate Safety, Security Management, Fire Protection, and Emergency Response programs.

  • Support the development and execution of enterprise Health and Safety strategies aligned with corporate objectives and operational priorities.

  • Serve as a trusted technical and strategic advisor to the VP of EHSS and senior leadership on Health and Safety matters.

  • Lead, manage, and mentor direct reports and site‑level Health and Safety professionals.

  • Foster strong cross‑functional partnerships to integrate safety expectations into daily operations, decision‑making, and culture.

  • Champion consistent application of standards and best practices across all sites.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local Health and Safety regulations and standards.

  • Oversee regulatory reporting, audits, and compliance documentation, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.

  • Manage the enterprise Contractor Safety Program and associated risk controls.

  • Prepare and deliver Health and Safety performance and compliance reports for leadership review.

  • Under the direction of the VP of EHSS, oversee emergency preparedness and response programs to protect employees, operations, and assets.

  • Establish and maintain robust incident response and crisis management protocols.

  • Direct investigations of serious incidents, SIF potential events, and near‑misses, ensuring thorough root cause analysis and effective corrective and preventive actions.

  • Design and deliver enterprise Health and Safety training programs for leaders, employees, and contractors.

  • Drive a proactive safety culture through engagement, education, accountability, and visible leadership.

  • Lead corporate‑wide safety campaigns, awareness initiatives, and recognition programs to reinforce desired behaviors and outcomes.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Safety Management, Engineering, or a related discipline; Master’s degree strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive Health and Safety experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.

  • Manufacturing, industrial, or similarly complex operational environment experience preferred.

  • General knowledge of environmental programs strongly preferred.

Technical & Leadership Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of Health and Safety regulations, standards, and best practices.

  • Proven record of designing, implementing, and sustaining effective enterprise Health and Safety programs.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence across multiple sites and stakeholder groups.

  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and data‑driven decision‑making capabilities.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to build credibility, drive accountability, and foster collaboration at all organizational levels.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or equivalent professional certification.
