As Corporate Counsel, you will provide strategic legal counsel that protects and advances the business operations of Associated Electric Cooperative. Your representation will cover a broad spectrum of matters, including regulatory compliance, corporate governance, finance, wholesale electric market participation, environmental compliance, real estate, labor and employment, commercial transactions, contract negotiation, and litigation management. This is a high-impact role at the center of electric utility operations, regulatory policy, and enterprise risk management.
This opportunity may be filled at the Corporate Counsel or Senior Corporate Counsel level, depending on the selected candidate’s experience and demonstrated capabilities.
Provide strategic legal advice to the organization, including management, accounting and finance, human resources, technology, and engineering professionals
Legal research and writing
Represent or coordinate representation in federal, state, administrative, and regulatory proceedings
Draft, review, and negotiate contracts
Lead, support, and/or advise on internal investigations
Coordinate and support regulatory investigation response
Review, update, and advise on organizational policies and procedures
Track and advise on emerging regulatory policies impacting the electric utility industry
Handle routine matters with moderate independence while escalating novel, unfamiliar, and high-risk issues to supervisory attorney(s)
Support contract lifecycle for moderately complex or custom agreements, in addition to standard or routine agreements
Serve as primary legal support to at least one (1) department within Associated, taking on responsibility for identifying legal risks and strategies in the applicable practice area(s)
Contribute to litigation strategy for matters within defined practice area(s) subject to the supervision of supervising attorney(s)
Support more senior attorneys in their respective dedicated practice areas as requested
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Minimum 4 years of legal experience
Active bar membership in good standing, preferably Missouri
Excellent legal research and writing skills
Experience or interest in compliance and regulatory support for matters subject to the jurisdiction of applicable federal regulatory agencies, such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Experience or interest in labor and employment law, including counseling on labor relations, immigration, benefits, wage and hour issues, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title VII, Missouri Human Rights Act (MHRA), and employment litigation matters
Ability to identify issues and solutions related to challenges facing the organization and its industry
Experience or interest in the organization’s core legal practice areas, such as electric utilities, energy law, environmental law, commercial transactions, real estate law, or employment law
6-8 or more years of legal experience
Experience in the electric utility or energy industry
Experience working with federal regulatory agencies
Strong contract drafting and negotiation experience
