Hi, we're Nuts.com!
Nuts.com is a self-funded, profitable, rapidly growing multi-channel DTC specialty food and wellness company with over 550 people on our team. We're changing the landscape of snacking on nuts, dried fruit, chocolate and more! We planted our roots in Newark, New Jersey during the Great Depression, selling premium nuts on Mulberry Street's open-air market. We've come quite a long way since then, taking our multi-generational family business online in 1999. Even after 97 years, we continue to pride ourselves in expertly sourcing the highest quality foods and treating our customers like family.
What's our team like? We're driven, collaborative and entrepreneurial. Energy and passion power our business and we look for candidates who share in that excitement to help us continue to build something special.
The role:
Nuts.com is seeking a Controller to lead accounting, financial reporting, and internal control activities. This is a unique opportunity to support the in-process implementation of an upgraded ERP system, redesign supporting financial processes, and build a strong foundation for future, scalable growth. This role is ideal for a hands-on builder, a leader who loves creating process, clarity, and accountability, who thrives in an evolving, dynamic environment and is energized by data-driven decision making.
Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will partner closely with Operations, Procurement and Senior Leadership to support cost accounting, inventory valuation and financial processes in support of production and the warehouse.
This role requires a doer. Someone who can see what’s broken or unclear, create the plan, and drive it to completion, especially when ownership is ambiguous or cross-functional alignment is required.
What you'll do:
Financial Leadership & Reporting
- Oversee the timely completion of the monthly close process and supporting account reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and financial integrity of financial information
- Own the controllership agenda: proactively identify recurring issues, close bottlenecks, process gaps, and control weaknesses, and drive sustainable fixes (not workarounds)
- Manage inventory accounting, including maintaining proper costing methodologies, labor and overhead rates, ensuring BOM accuracy, and analyzing production variances. Advance the organization’s evaluation of production and manufacturing variances and overhead costs to improve margin visibility
- Assess current accounting processes and identify gaps relative to US GAAP compliance. Design and execute remediation plans, redesigning processes as needed to build a scalable financial close and reporting cycle
- Research complex accounting issues and provide recommendations. Coordinate with external auditors, advisors and internal stakeholders to ensure accurate interpretation and application of GAAP. Prepare the company for a GAAP-based financial audit
- Lead through ambiguity and change: translate high-level goals (speed, scalability, audit readiness) into specific operating mechanisms: SOPs, templates, review cadences, documentation standards, and clear ownership
- Train the accounting team on new policies and processes related to the GAAP transition and ERP adoption
- Develop a high-performing accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability, technical excellence, and continuous improvement. Provide ongoing coaching, training and professional development opportunities to strengthen technical accounting skills and GAAP proficiency
- Evaluate team structure and resource needs to support growth, scalability and evolving operational processes and reporting requirements
- Partner with FP&A on internal reporting requirements as a result of the transition from legacy to redesigned reporting practices upon ERP adoption.
- Evaluate team structure and resource needs to support growth, scalability, and evolving operational processes and reporting requirements
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Design, implement, and monitor internal controls across all financial processes, including GAAP compliance, manufacturing, procurement, and inventory processes
- Create clarity: build and document policies, approval thresholds, and controls that withstand scrutiny and scale — ensuring the function is not dependent on institutional memory or heroic effort
- Coordinate annual audit, tax and other compliance activities including preparation of supporting documentation and timely responses to inquiries
Systems & Process Improvement
- Support the adoption of the organization’s ERP system including performing user acceptance testing, providing feedback to implementation partners, partnering with business partners on design decisions and collaborating with internal stakeholders on implementation of new processes
- Serve as a finance transformation leader during ERP adoption (with strong appointed Project Management Support): ensure new processes are not just implemented, but implemented well, with clean data, disciplined workflows, clear ownership, and strong controls
- Identify opportunities to improve legacy processes upon ERP adoption, championing sound change management practices and effective cross-functional communication. Ensure that the ERP is effectively and efficiently leveraged by all relevant functions.
What you’ll bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA strongly preferred
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a manufacturing environment
- Deep knowledge of inventory accounting, cost accounting, and manufacturing processes
- Strong understanding of ERP systems. Netsuite experience is a plus
- Advanced Excel skills
- Proven ability to partner cross‑functionally
- Detail‑oriented, analytical, and comfortable operating in a fast‑paced, hands‑on environment
- Strong people leader comfortable managing through periods of transformation
What we offer:
- A high-growth and rewarding role in a foundationally strong and rapidly evolving business
- Annual Salary Range: $225,000 - $240,000 plus annual bonus
- Excellent benefits including a 401K Match
- Paid Maternity, Adoption and Paternity leave
- And all the Nuts.com snacks your heart desires + a 40% employee discount
