Coordinator - Communications and Engagement

The Communications Coordinator is the lead storyteller for LSU Residential Life, responsible for creating and managing student-centered digital content—primarily social media—that drives engagement, supports occupancy goals, and builds a strong sense of belonging for on-campus residents. Reporting to the Associate Director of Communications, the Communications Coordinator’s oversight includes content creation for social media, digital campaigns, digital signage, and in-person events, like orientation, Fall Fest, Move-in, and pop-up events. This role serves as the creative force and leader-teacher of a student marketing intern team that aims to build affinity for the residential experience through student engagement. The ideal candidate brings a balance of strategic thinking, creative execution, and student-centered energy to showcase the on-campus living experience at LSU. 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE:

  • Develop and execute student-focused communications and engagement opportunities to promote the on-campus experience and make campus feel like home

Shape the long-term social media and digital storytelling vision for Residential Life

Building a content-sharing culture with Residential Life & Education staff to better tell the resident experience story is a unique opportunity for the Communications Coordinator. There is an ability to define and evolve how the residential experience story is told across digital platforms in a way that resonates with students and other stakeholders through providing  creative direction and feedback to the team of approximately 15 student communication interns to increase current student engagement.

Build systems and processes that empower staff and students to contribute high-quality content

Working closely with both departmental colleagues and university constituents, the Communications Coordinator will serve as a hands-on contributing member of the Residential Life team, identifying and recommending opportunities for improved communications, content, and timelines for successful campaigns in order to build systems and processes for content creation.  

Advance students feeling like LSU  is home

Through creative storytelling and content creation, there is an ability to show students they belong at LSU and that their residential experience matters. The Communication Coordinator has the opportunity connect communication strategy to student success, retention, and community-building goals through authentic storytelling

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Social Media & Digital Communication (60%)

Develop and manage content strategy through graphic design, video production, photo shoots, persona communications, and copy writing for digital, web, and social media that supports departmental and university strategic messaging and themes for all unique audiences, including, but not limited to, residents, prospective students, parents, and alumni. Track engagement metrics and refine digital strategy to maximize student reach and interaction and meet performance goals. Update and maintain website content and digital signage to keep materials timely and relevant.

Write and send targeted mailers that promote campus apartment leasing, off-campus apartment leasing resources, and key messages. Update and maintain website content and digital signage to keep materials timely

and relevant. Track engagement metrics and refine digital strategy to maximize student reach and interaction.

Branding & Departmental Support (20%)

Provide quality control and brand alignment over content and materials across the department. Work collaboratively with the Division of Marketing and Communications Office and adhere to university branding standards. Educate new team members on brand standards and maintain digital brand toolkits.

Maintain, update and order promotional inventories and manage branded materials (giveaways, signage, swag, printed collateral).

Manage and respond to inquiries through shared accounts (e.g. reslifecomm@lsu.edu; housing@lsu.edu).

Public Speaking & Events (15%) 

Coordinate with internal staff and external partners on the department’s participation and representation at large-scale student events (e.g. Welcome Week, Orientation, Fall Fest, Enrollment events), smaller-scale campus events (living expo, safety days, family weekend, pop-ups), and on- and off-campus recruitment events. Present departmental information at orientation sessions.

Administrative (5%) 

Meet with the associate director on a regular basis. Chair or participate as the communication representative on various departmental and divisional committees. Serve as departmental representative to Campus Communicators and Division of Student Affairs work groups.  Coordinate departmental projects as requested. Support broad division/institution efforts including at least 40 hours per year spent helping divisional initiatives such as Move-In Day, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Career Expo, Disability Services Finals Testing, other special projects etc. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, communications, digital communications, or a related field.

Related communications experience

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience managing multiple social media accounts or campaigns simultaneously

Comfort using analytics to inform content strategy and improve engagement

Experience supervising or mentoring students or early-career staff

Experience with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or comparable design platforms; basic video editing for short-form social media content.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS:

This is a full-time academic professional position that requires evening and weekend hours for special events, including set-up and break-down of table displays, tents, etc.
