Position Overview

The Controls Engineering Manager, within the Real Estate and Workplace Services Engineering team, is primarily responsible for leading a team of controls engineers to build, test, troubleshoot, and maintain our PLC- and SCADA-based control and monitoring systems. The Controls Engineering Manager provides leadership support to the Controls Engineering staff. This role is the point person for systems design, commissioning, and qualification in FDA, CAP, and CLIA environment. This position is primarily responsible for supervision, leading, training, and assisting Controls Engineering team members.
This position will focus on planning and executing the Controls Engineering team’s work, reporting on metrics, and developing the team to take on more complex projects in the future. This position will be expected to provide project leadership, subject matter expertise, and lead collaboration efforts with internal experts and external partners to meet the company objectives.
This position supports a collaborative environment that promotes positive teamwork where all members are working for the good of Exact Sciences. This is an ideal role for a hands-on technical person with good communication skills looking to make an impact in the fight against cancer.
Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provide leadership on best practices for the development of processes and products in a regulated environment.
- Lead the team in continuous improvement projects and support other areas’ needs dependent on demand.
- Consistent demonstration of exceptional leadership qualities, including but not limited to the ability to attract and retain the best team, foster a culture of high performance, lead with integrity, humility, accountability, and courage, and set a clear vision to energize teams towards the future.
- Effectively manage priorities, triaging support requests, and work closely with other engineering teams to deliver the best systems and projects possible.
- Provide leadership for the Controls Engineering team by setting expectations, coaching, mentoring, training, conducting 1:1 meetings, and providing performance feedback.
- Serve as the primary source of contact for internal Controls Engineering requests for troubleshooting, improvements, and new project work.
- Coach, mentor, and raise the team's ability to deliver and exceed expectations while creating opportunities for team member development.
- Troubleshoot and correct faults in systems maintained or managed by the Controls Engineering group.
- Be a subject matter expert for equipment and systems managed or maintained by the Controls Engineering group.
- Work closely with laboratory operations and engineering teams to ensure all systems are designed appropriately for forecasted demands and planned projects.
- Lead or participate in investigations and troubleshooting of processes associated with internal review, CAPA, audits, or Complaints.
- Proactively prioritize workload and delegate effectively to meet project deliverables.
- Be highly creative and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Work productively in a demanding environment.
- Implement and monitor compliance to applicable EHS safety procedures.
- Review applicable work instructions, standard operating procedures, and other documentation; update as appropriate.
- Continuously reduces costs associated with Controls Engineering activities.

- Ability to work seated for approximately 75% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 25% of a typical working day.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds for approximately 10% of a typical working day.
- Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
- Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
- Ability and means to travel 20% between local Exact Sciences locations.
- Ability to travel 10% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related technical field; or high school diploma or GED and 4+ years of relevant experience, or Associates Degree and 2+ years of relevant experience.
- 8+ years of experience in controls, automation, or related industry as outlined in the essential duties.
- 2+ years in a role with progressively increasing responsibilities such as Controls Engineer, or Engineering Manager.
- Successful track record of leading projects holistically from inception to successful implementation with cross-functional participation in a matrixed environment.
- Working knowledge of working in FDA, CAP, or CLIA regulated environments
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and SharePoint).
- Advanced proficiency in PLC and SCADA programming and architecture design.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the Pharmaceutical, Medical Device, Diagnostic and/or other Life Science fields.
- Hands-on experience with AVEVA System Platform and Allen Bradley PLCs.
- Demonstrated ability to plan workload, allocate tasks, and scale operations to align with business priorities.
- 4+ years’ experience leading and/or directing people and/or project teams.
- 3+ years’ of experience in people management.

Salary Range:
$112,000.00 - $190,000.00
The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible.
