About Maybell Quantum
Maybell Quantum is redefining the future of computing. We are a venture-backed quantum hardware innovator building the technology that will transform industries for decades to come. Quantum computers will be as transformative to the next 30 years as the internet was to the last 30—and our team is creating the hardware foundation to make this revolution possible. We are solving incredibly challenging problems at the cutting edge of physics and engineering.
The Opportunity
We are seeking our first Controller to own the company’s accounting function end-to-end. This is a high-impact, individual contributor role for a hands-on financial leader who thrives at the intersection of complex hardware manufacturing and high-growth venture capital.
We are looking for a partner who understands that accurate financials start on the production floor. You will partner with Engineering and Operations to optimize our Bill of Materials (BOM), manage complex inventory flows, and build a scalable financial infrastructure that can support our transition from R&D to full-scale commercialization.
Key Responsibilities
- Manufacturing, Inventory & Cost Accounting
- Inventory Command: Oversee the full lifecycle of inventory accounting including Raw Materials, Work-in-Progress (WIP), Finished Goods, and spare parts. Ensure the physical reality of the warehouse matches the ERP.
- Costing Precision: Manage standard costing (or job costing) methodologies. Analyze variances in material usage, purchase price, and manufacturing overhead to provide feedback to the Operations team.
- BOM & Production Data: Partner with Engineering and Operations to ensure Bill of Materials (BOM) accuracy and proper routing costs.
- R&D vs. COGS: Expertly distinguish between R&D prototype costs and commercial Cost of Goods Sold (COGS), ensuring compliance with capitalization rules and R&D tax credit eligibility.
- Supply Chain Finance: Handle "landed cost" calculations (freight, duties, tariffs) to ensure accurate margin analysis.
- Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
- Own the Close: Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, delivering accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- GL Management: Maintain the general ledger, including complex accruals, journal entries, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Cash Flow: Monitor cash burn, manage vendor payments (AP), and oversee customer invoicing and collections (AR).
- CapEx Management: Track fixed assets and depreciation, specifically for high-value manufacturing equipment and tooling.
- Systems & Process Architecture
- ERP Optimization: Serve as the functional owner of the accounting/inventory ERP. Drive improvements to ensure the system captures granular data without slowing down production.
- Scalable Controls: Design and implement internal controls that are appropriate for a fast-moving startup but robust enough for due diligence and audits.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA or CMA (Certified Management Accountant) highly preferred.
- Experience: 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with mandatory experience in a manufacturing or hardware environment.
- Inventory Expertise: Deep familiarity with inventory-heavy environments, high SKU counts, and the complexities of WIP tracking.
- Startup DNA: Experience operating as a sole accounting lead or in a high-growth, early-stage environment. You must be willing to "roll up your sleeves."
- Technical Skills: Strong GAAP knowledge, advanced Excel skills, and experience with ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, Odoo, Plex, or similar).
Why You’ll Love It Here
- Competitive Compensation: Base salary range $120,000 - $170,000, plus performance bonuses.
- Meaningful Equity: Ownership options in one of the country's most promising deep tech startups.
- Impact: You won't just report the numbers; you will help define the unit economics of a new industry.
- Benefits: Comprehensive Health, Dental, and Vision insurance, 401(k) matching, and a flexible PTO policy.
- The Team: Collaboration with world-class scientists, engineers, and business leaders.
