Position Summary

Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit organization serving children and families, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead and manage the organization’s accounting and financial reporting functions. The Controller will oversee daily accounting operations, ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations, and support leadership with accurate financial reporting and analysis.

This role requires a strong background in nonprofit accounting, financial management, and internal controls. The Controller will work closely with senior leadership to ensure sound financial stewardship that supports the organization’s mission and programs.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grant accounting.

  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

  • Manage the month-end and year-end close processes.

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.

  • Maintain and improve internal accounting controls and financial policies.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Assist in the preparation of annual operating budgets and financial forecasts.

  • Monitor organizational and program budgets and provide variance analysis.

  • Support leadership with financial planning and strategic analysis.

Audit & Compliance

  • Coordinate and manage the annual audit process and serve as the primary contact for external auditors.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as grant and funding requirements.

  • Oversee preparation of financial reports required by funders and regulatory agencies.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff.

  • Promote efficient workflows, strong internal controls, and continuous improvement within the finance department.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with program and operations teams.

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Evaluate and improve financial systems, reporting processes, and operational efficiencies.

  • Support implementation and optimization of accounting and financial management tools.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3–5 years in a nonprofit environment.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.

  • Experience managing audits and grant compliance.

  • Advanced proficiency in accounting software and Excel.

  • Demonstrated leadership and team management experience.

Preferred

  • CPA or MBA strongly preferred.

  • Experience with nonprofit accounting systems such as MIP, Sage Intacct, or similar platforms.
