The Opportunity | Business Unit Controller

Reporting to the VP/GM of the Fleet Solutions business unit, this is an ideal opportunity for an experienced Controller and Finance/Accounting Team Leader to step into a challenging role; responsible for coordinating, administering and controlling financial operations for a nearly $100M business unit. The ideal candidate works across the Fleet solutions organization as a business partner to review, analyze and interpret financial performance and trends. Leads a Finance team committed to excellence in Business Planning, Analysis, Compliance and Accounting operations. Exhibits a high level of skill in financial modeling. Oversees the development of financial systems and procedures required to execute financial reporting, accounting requirements, and maintain controls. Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure sound operation of the department. Provides tax, insurance and other reports required by governmental regulations, audit agencies, and corporate governance.

Our Fleet Solutions group supports the US Navy aircraft carrier, submarine, and various support vessels repair work. We provide technical direction primarily associated with shipboard installation and overhauls of Curtiss-Wright and OEM partnership equipment. This unique opportunity will have full Controller and Finance team responsibility for the entire Fleet Solutions business unit, including facilities in Chula Vista (San Diego), CA., Chesapeake, VA., and Mayport, FL.

Location: Chula Vista, CA or Chesapeake, VA

Salary: $140,000 – 180,000

Your Challenge

  • Direct the functional areas within Financial Reporting / Analysis and Cost Accounting / Compliance while coordinating an effective liaison with various areas of Corporate Shared Services. Revenue recognition, Long-term Contract Accounting / POC, Compliance and Risk management are focus areas

  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and other regulatory or governmental requirements such as Sarbanes-Oxley and Corporate Policies and Procedures. Be attuned to early warnings of financial control gaps and be able to proactively implement action plans to swiftly remedy

  • Provide counsel and advice to business unit management in developing objectives, strategies and tactics from a financial and accounting perspective

  • Participate in senior management team meetings to review financial performance against objectives and targets; develop strategies to overcome obstacles to growth and performance

  • Encourage ideas and creative approaches for continuous improvement

  • Stay informed regarding potential liabilities faced by the company on all fronts and work with the senior management team to mitigate these. Recognize early signs of financial problems and be able to provide suggestions on decisive action to address or prevent these problems

  • Establish a clear understanding of other functional areas of the business unit and provide guidance to executives of Business Development, Operations, Quality, HR and Program Management in relation to financial goals and strategies

  • Provide ERP system oversight and support on financial modules to ensure proper accounting across business activities

  • Prepare and present annual and long-range budgets, monthly forecasts, and cash flow projections to guide the financial management of the business unit

  • Oversee preparation and timely filing of financial reporting for governmental and multiple audit agencies as well as Corporate requirements

  • Provide training and guidance to finance staff and non-financial people across the business

  • As our Fleet Solutions Controller, you will have broad responsibility for the business unit Finance team located in our Chula Vista, CA., and Chesapeake, VA. facilities

  • This position has a dual reporting relationship with our Divisional VP/Controller, and may work closely with other BU Controllers as needed

  • Build out a standardized and stable Finance team that work consistently, collaboratively, and effectively to ensure timely and accurate reporting

  • Provide finance guidance to the office and manufacturing teams towards successfully achieving key business metrics (P&L, Program execution, On-Time Delivery, Quality, EH&S, etc.)

  • Monitor the financial performance of all three sites, and the Business unit as a whole, to ensure targets are being met

  • Manage compliance with local, state, and national regulatory bodies, as needed.

  • Other duties as necessary

What you Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in a Financial management discipline (Accounting, Finance)

  • Certification in a recognized professional designation or MBA is a plus

  • 10-15 years' diverse financial experience in various finance / accounting roles; practical experience within a large equipment manufacturing environment across both government and commercial businesses

  • Hands-on experience working with long term contract accounting including (EAC, POC, ETC)

  • 5 to 7 years leadership and management experience

  • Knowledge of Oracle preferred or similar ERP system

  • Experience with government accounting is an asset. Understanding of ASC-606, Sarbanes-Oxley, Cost Accounting Standards and Federal Acquisition Rules is a plus

  • A history of active involvement and success beyond the traditional responsibilities of financial reporting

  • Must be a sole US citizen and able to obtain and maintain DOD security clearance

  • Repair/manufacturing and shipyard industry experience with related leadership responsibility a strong plus but not required

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and develop effective working relationships with internal and external customers is a must

  • Entrepreneurial and innovative spirit and sense of urgency

  • Strong collaboration and partnership skills with the ability to listen, solve complex problems, and deal with ambiguity

  • Ability to develop talent, both with individuals and diverse teams

  • Strong customer focus is a must in this role
