Can you imagine having the responsibility of operating critical infrastructure, moving energy to millions of people in real time? Does the idea of some of Canada’s energy industry flowing through your fingertips excite you? That is what we do – all day, everyday – 365 days a year. As a System Controller, you will be responsible for operating a major North American pipeline asset from a central control center facility in Calgary.

What you will do:

  • Remote operation of the pipeline using a SCADA system to monitor and respond to pipeline events.
  • Initiate control actions as appropriate under normal, abnormal, and emergency conditions, and notify applicable on-call personnel of any situation requiring remedial action.
  • Adjusting facility operations to match business and other operational demands with real-time operating conditions. 
  • Continuous communication with the Field Operations groups for alarm response and managing equipment performance.
  • Utilizing strong situational awareness skills, including ability to manage fatigue and maintain alertness through a variety of workload conditions.
  • Coordinating operational activities with field personnel with respect to planned and unplanned maintenance, while working with customer gas plant operators to manage flow rates, gas quality or other events.
  • Completing required documentation or records, as required, including maintaining a detailed shift log and preparing a comprehensive shift handover.
  • Using procedures and operating plans with limited supervision, sometimes working alone, or as part of a small team.

Who You Are:

You Have:

  • Technical degree/diploma in instrumentation, electrical, or related field OR relevant operations experience with a minimum of 3 years as a control center operator, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Formal technical training related to control room operations, instrumentation, process or power engineering, or other disciplines and training to enable confident, risk based, high impact decisions.
  • Capable of working shift work on a rotating 12-hour day and night shift schedule - that includes weekends and holidays. Some overtime may be required to support ad-hoc schedule changes.
  • Experience as a Controller in other industries such as electrical generation, air, or rail traffic control would be considered. Other suitable experiences could include plant operations, drillers, or other occupations where real time decisions are made in a console-based environment.
  • Proven ability to work in rapidly changing environment while setting work priorities, often under time constraints during changing conditions while remaining calm and effective through abnormal and emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of gas transmission, pipeline operations, hydraulics, pressures, flows, and gas composition are desired - but energy industry experience is not necessarily required with the right combination of aptitude, skills, and personality.
  • General understanding of the natural gas business and energy infrastructure in North America.
  • Excellent communication skills coupled with a safety conscious mindset with a strong sense of social responsibility related to serving the needs of our customers, end users, and the environment. 

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of pipeline systems and SCADA operating systems.
  • Experience in gas transmission or energy infrastructure.
  • Effective team skills and ability to mentor others.

Note: All selected applicants will undergo Console Operator Basic Requirement Assessment aptitude testing.  The successful candidate will also be required to complete a 9-to-12-month comprehensive Controller training program including self-study, examinations, and on-the-job training with another Controller prior to becoming qualified.

This position is a Temporary (fixed-term) position lasting 2 years from the hire date.

Working Conditions:

This position experiences stressful situations and requires flexibility in work schedule. You will work rotating 12-hour shifts (day and night), including weekends and holidays. Some overtime may be required to support schedule changes. The role involves operating in a high-pressure environment where quick, accurate decisions are critical.

Physical Requirements include but are not limited to:

Grasping, kneeling, light – moderate lifting (objects up to 20 pounds), reaching above shoulder, repetitive motion, typing, sitting, standing, visual requirement (able to see screens, detect color coding, read fine print), hearing requirement and the ability to sit at a computer for long periods of time.
