PAY RANGE

The Target Pay Range for this position is $31.92-$38.85 hourly. The full Pay Range is $24.76-$46.06 hourly. At BECU, compensation decisions are determined using factors such as relevant job-related skills, experience, and education or training. Should an offer for employment be made, we will consider individual qualifications. In addition to your salary, compensation incentives are available for the hired applicant. IMPACT YOU’LL MAKE:

As a Consumer Loan Underwriter at BECU, you’ll be a trusted guide in helping members move forward with clarity and confidence. You’ll use your lending expertise to evaluate, analyze, and underwrite loan applications—ensuring members receive fair, timely, and thoughtful decisions. Your work will directly influence our members’ financial well‑being and strengthen their trust in BECU.

Through every interaction, you’ll bring insight, consistency, and care to the underwriting process, shaping positive outcomes for both members and our lending portfolio.

Note: This role will require travel to the Tukwila, WA office on a quarterly basis.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Uphold Regulatory & Compliance Standards:
    Perform all responsibilities in alignment with BECU Competencies, compliance requirements, regulatory guidelines, and information protection standards to ensure secure and high-quality loan practices.

  • Apply Lending Policy Expertise:
    Use your deep knowledge of Credit Union loan policies, real estate lending practices, state and federal regulations, and agency requirements to accurately underwrite consumer loans.

  • Make Confident Credit Decisions:
    Evaluate, approve, counteroffer, or deny loans and credit lines within established lending limits and automated scoring guidelines—always centering the member’s best interest.

  • Ensure Timely Loan Processing:
    Provide fast, thorough attention to loan applications, clearly communicating denials, counteroffers, and underwriting criteria while offering alternative product options when appropriate.

  • Collaborate with Indirect Lending Partners:
    Partner with dealerships in the Indirect Lending Channel to purchase loan packages within service levels, and quickly assist with any dealer concerns through courteous, solution-focused communication.

  • Support Members Through Detailed Loan Reviews:
    Analyze member needs, discuss restructuring opportunities, and help complete loan applications when necessary to ensure a smooth experience.

  • Analyze Financial Documentation:
    Review and interpret tax returns and cash flow insights to ensure accurate credit evaluations.

  • Provide Decision Recommendations:
    Offer informed recommendations to team members and escalate decisions to management when loan parameters exceed your lending authority.

  • Maintain Portfolio Quality:
    Meet and uphold lending portfolio quality standards through consistent, sound underwriting practices.

  • Serve as a Resolution Resource:
    Address and resolve member and dealer questions or issues that fall within your lending authority.

  • Educate Members on Credit:
    Maintain thorough knowledge of credit bureau processes and help members understand how credit impacts their financial options.

  • Stay Current on Consumer Loan Products:
    Maintain a strong understanding of BECU’s loan products, decision matrices, scoring systems, and loan decision pathways.

  • Enhance Workflows & Processes:
    Monitor underwriting workflows and recommend process improvements to support service-level efficiency and operational enhancements.

  • Contribute to Team Productivity:
    Actively assist with service-level monitoring, productivity tracking, and departmental improvements.

  • Flexibly Support Team Needs:
    Perform additional duties as assigned to ensure smooth, effective departmental operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business required or equivalent work or education-related experience.
  • Typically three years of consumer lending related experience required.
  • Minimum one year of experience analyzing and verifying income on tax returns.
  • Ability to make sound credit recommendations and decisions required.
  • Mathematical skills, with a high degree of accuracy required.
  • Verbal and written skills to effectively communicate in the English language required.
  • Ability to effectively problem solve and trouble shoot difficult member situations required.
  • Full time hours, with additional hours as necessary required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • One year of consumer lending underwriting experience to include all secured, unsecured, indirect, and home equity products and appraisal underwriting preferred.
  • Ability to handle inbound and outbound calls with external partners.
