GENERAL FUNCTION: Perform a wide range of audit, compliance and credit risk activities for declined consumer loan applications. Render decisions on complex underwriting exception requests across multiple sites and ensure adherence to regulatory compliance for all direct consumer loan products. Serve as a subject matter expert and final decision maker on consumer underwriting matters for the Consumer Line of Business interfacing extensively with Credit Risk, Quality Control, Product, and Compliance at Fifth Third Bank to ensure decisions meet regulatory requirements. Function as an escalation point for decisions requiring higher level of knowledge and authority.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform high level analysis of complex loan requests requiring extensive knowledge including cash flow of business and personal tax returns to ensure consumer credit policy has been thoroughly evaluated for credit exception approval.
  • Analyze policies, procedures and guidelines in a way that maximizes productivity but mitigates to the appropriate level of risk.
  • Review and decision exception requests in accordance with the exception tolerance level set by Senior Risk Leaders.
  • Must be able to underwrite all types of consumer loans.
  • Partner with first and second line risk partners to enhance internal control testing as needed to ensure regulatory compliance and loan quality is within exception tolerance levels as set by Senior Risk leaders.
  • Analyze and resolve issues identified by 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Line Risk partners.
  • Perform quality review of loans completed by Underwriters I, II and III to ensure adherence to compliance requirements (FEMA, HMDA, Reg B etc.)
  • Partner with retail and market personnel across the entire footprint and at all levels, and recommend possible counter offers or credit exceptions;
  • Consult and educate Retail staff on decisions made on complex transactions
  • Support Credit and Collateral underwriters as well as Loan Specialist as it relates to credit and compliance risk tolerance.
  • Render final credit decision on complex applications once proper documentation is obtained.
  • Identify and implement practices that mitigate risk and improve overall efficiency and quality of individual’s performance including overall process.
  • Define business requirements that solve business process problems.
  • Coordinate with IT on resolving systemic issues that impact loan originations, and communicate issues along with anticipated timelines to Retail.
  • Assist in resolving policy and procedure related escalations.
  • Participate in special projects as determined by senior management.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of experience/education
  • Minimum 7 years Consumer Lending or related industry experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years Consumer Lending Underwriting experience. Consumer Lending Credit Authority is commensurate with consumer lending authority guidelines and business need.
  • Demonstrated Leadership skills
  • Exceptional analytical and organizational skills.
  • Proven teamwork, collaboration and partnership skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of both equity and non-equity underwriting and associated credit policy
  • Advanced and in-depth knowledge of consumer lending guidelines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills. Must be proficient in technology utilized to communicate effectively such as Adobe, Excel, must have experience with Consumer origination systems, platforms tools, and technology. PowerPoint, Word, and Website development.
  • Position requires the ability to be flexible, reliable, work independently, and committed to delivering projects to within deadlines.
  • Ability to make high quality decisions, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet deadlines in fast paced environment.
  • Ability to interact with senior level managers; build consensus; and motivate others.
  • This position requires S.A.F.E. Act registration at the time of employment through the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS). The NMLS web site (mortgage.nationwidelicensingsystem.org) provides the MU4R questions and registration required for employment in this position

Total Base Pay Range 61,200.00 - 125,500.00 USD Annual
