What is the opportunity?

As a member of the Wills and Trusts Resource Group (WTRG) under the Professional Practice Group, the Consultant will be part of the principal resource facility providing technical assistance, analysis, and recommendations to Canadian Wealth Management partners on estate and trust accounts, powers of attorney/protection mandates, incapacity, and disbursement issues. The position will support revenue generation through retention of funds by improving the client experience on estate settlements and the opening of new trust accounts, and will help minimize risk and promote consistency in business practices across Canadian Wealth Management. This opportunity is an 18-month contract with full-time hours.

What will you do?

  • Research and analyze estate, incapacity, and trust issues raised by the Canadian Wealth Management operational business units utilizing knowledge of relevant jurisdictional laws and principles with a focus on civil law matters.
  • Make reasoned and informed recommendations to the business with the Senior Manager relating to the support of trust, estate, and incapacity issues, including but not limited to proper disbursements, succession of trustees, issues related to registered plans, disputes and complaints regarding a specific account and all related issues surrounding trust and estate accounts.
  • Prioritize escalation of estate, trust, and incapacity account issues based on urgency of the issue to provide timely recommendations
  • Critically analyze, review and interpret estate, trust and incapacity documentation received from the business related to the opening or change in an estate or trust account to identify issues and to provide a standardized summary of relevant information for the ongoing use by the business, utilizing knowledge of relevant jurisdictional laws and principles (civil law and common law)
  • Identify business and legal risks on any account issue escalated to WTRG and analyze and further escalate the issue to the Senior Manager and to the appropriate resource function (i.e. Law Group, TAG, Compliance)
  • Support Canadian Wealth Management partners in review and development of proposed policies/guidelines related to estate, trust and incapacity account administration issues to manage risk and to promote consistency in business practices across all lines of businesses
  • Assist Senior Manager with providing coaching and feedback in order to develop the WTRG staff and foster an environment of continuous learning and improvement

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • University degree (LL.B.)
  • 5+ years’ experience in the estate and trust industry
  • Bilingualism (English and French) required, as you will regularly do business with RBC partners and/or employees across Canada with English and French speaking needs
  • Capacity to act as the subject matter expert for a team and provide guidance and support to team members
  • Demonstrated ability to self-manage, think independently, and analyze complex issues

Nice-to-have

  • Trust designation preferred (MTI or TEP)
  • Experience as the lead subject matter expert on a team or experience in a people leadership role
  • Masters in notarial law (LL.M.)
  • A member in good standing of the Chambre des Notaires
