About the opportunity

  • Obstetric haematologist (casual)
  • Mercy Hospital is a fully accredited Level 6 public specialist teaching hospital providing both public and private patient care through maternity services, neonatology and paediatrics, perioperative services, specialist and sub-specialist gynaecology, and associated health, support and diagnostic services. It is a major teaching hospital and specialist referral centre with the medical, nursing, midwifery and allied health expertise to treat the most complex obstetric, neonatal and gynaecological cases. 
  • Mercy Perinatal delivers clinical care for high-risk  in the Department of Perinatal Medicine at the Mercy Hospital. Our multidisciplinary team provides comprehensive counselling and pregnancy care, as well as obstetric imaging, foetal monitoring, and prenatal procedures.
  • This role is for a haematologist with particular interest and expertise in obstetric hematology. They will provide quality client-focused care to patients, their family and carers, using a holistic approach within our multidisciplinary obstetric haematology clinic, alongside our maternal foetal medicine, genetics and midwifery team.
  • We offer pre-pregnancy advice and antenatal care with haematological conditions such as bleeding disorders, inherited thrombophilias, previous history of deep venous thromboembolism, haematological malignancies, severe anaemia or low platelets. We also offer genetic counselling, DNA testing and prenatal diagnosis for couples at risk of a baby with an inherited blood disorder, such as thalassemia major or sickle cell anaemia. Women who need day-stay admission for administration of intravenous therapy or foetal growth and well-being assessment can be looked after in our foetal surveillance unit on the day of this clinic. We can also perform ultrasound assessment of foetal growth and well-being in our clinic.
  • Be part of a multi-disciplinary team which requires you to provide highly responsive and flexible service to consumers and carers.
  • The role will involve outpatient care of perinatal patients only. In-patient haematology care and after-hours consult service is provided by Austin Health. The successful candidate will be able to liaise effectively with Austin Health to provide seamless care for complex patients.
  • This is a casual appointment to for leave cover.
  • The usual schedule for the clinic is every second Tuesday morning.
