Construction Cost Estimator

Customer Central - Indianapolis, IN Full time

 The Construction Cost Estimator is responsible for the execution of the store construction capital expense forecasting, estimating, management, and reporting for all Finish Line business units.  Assists in the management of store construction project costs, based on the priorities and needs of the company.  This individual will effectively exhibit JD Finish Line’s core values of Customer, People, Winning, Community, and Financial Responsibility in everything they do by performing the following main duties:

  • Develops initial project specific cost estimates by analyzing labor, material and time requirements with Project Managers, Design teams, and Real Estate team

  • Review project plans/specifications to gain a complete understanding of the projects scope

  • Monitor all addendums, scope changes and breakouts to ensure they are incorporated into the estimates and forecasts

  • Communicate with project managers and design team concerning any issues with project specifications, project scope, value engineering possibilities, timelines or other items pertaining to the estimate

  • Proficiently read and interpret construction drawings and all other technical documents in order to prepare estimates

  • Conduct research to obtain and maintain updated data on labor costs, materials, production times, etc.

  • Promote best practices with all construction related processes and product innovation projects 

  • Collaborate with owner supplied and all other vendors and, including purchasing agents to procure the most cost-effective pricing

  • Work with project management and design teams to develop project costs, scopes of work, timelines, and executables

  • Develops and maintains historical and geographical cost databases 

  • Evaluate and assist in tracking all Request for information (RFIs) and change orders for justification and reasonableness

  • Perform analysis of project plans and specifications.

  • Takes lead responsibility with the budgetary management of the various cost components of the project, identification of scope gap, financial risk exposure, and contingency impact analysis

  • Track and report, all capital project expenditures weekly 

  • Review and process all proposal requests, supplemental instructions and other contract documents.

  • Additional duties and projects as required.

Required Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in engineering, architecture, construction project management from a four-year college or university, or equivalent experience required.  At least 4+ years experience in construction, estimating, or similar role with a specialty retailer.  Internal JD Finish Line experience is a plus.

Required Computer and/or Technical Skills

Should have intermediate knowledge and abilities with Microsoft Office applications and should be skilled at Excel.  Experience in web-based project management programs, particularly Lucernex, Google Suite, and Smartsheets. Experience with Takeoff software such as On-Screen Takeoff, CostX, Bluebeam, or similar.

  • Strong communication skills

  • Excellent time and project management skills.

  • Very organized, creative, efficient, flexible and able to work well within a team.

  • Strong knowledge of tenant-improvement construction sequencing and durations to develop construction phasing plans and strategies

  • Ability to assess and inform Landlord Construction exhibits; mall/center design criteria; core/shell structural issues relative to Finish Line’s and additional partners’ intended designs; MEP and energy systems and requirements

  • Ability to inform and communicate technical construction aspects of potential deals to other departments and teams: develop project schedules; identify Landlord delivery requirements, risks, and trade-offs; review and inform capital budgets.

  • Self starter capable of operating with little supervision and the ability to escalate appropriately, logical and methodical

  • Highly technical, experienced construction industry professional

  • Strong technical, analytical, and strategic management skills based on owner, architectural or construction industry experience. 

  • Skilled with Microsoft, Google Suite, and Project Management software (i.e. Lucernex, Smartsheets) applications and any other relevant computer skills
