Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) seeks a skilled safety professional to join the Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) Directorate within the Worker Safety and Environment (WSE) Division, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Group as a Construction and Contractor Safety Specialist. This position supports the Construction and Contractor Safety program by implementing established safety requirements across low, moderate, high-risk, and construction work activities, both onsite and offsite.
The position operates with limited direction, applying technical knowledge and judgment to support safe work execution. The role partners with the Construction and Contractor Safety Manager and key stakeholders to apply established safety requirements, support field execution, and provide feedback to strengthen program effectiveness.
Core Responsibilities:
- Act as the ESH Point of Contact (POC) for assigned projects, collaborating with the Construction and Contractor Safety Manager and other key stakeholders
- Conduct technical safety reviews of work activities, including contracts, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), permits, and contractor safety plans, with emphasis on fall protection, steel erection, confined space, excavation, and hoisting operations
- Perform routine & document field inspections, job site walkdowns, and safety audits to verify compliance with DOE, OSHA, and ANL requirements
- Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to address complex or specialized hazards
- Assist Project Specialists & Managers in monitoring contractor safety performance and resolving identified issues
- Attend pre-job planning & weekly coordination meetings and support integration of safety requirements into work planning and execution
- Support the review and coordination of safe work permits, including open flame, excavation, blind penetration and energized work activities
- Deliver contractor safety training and review subcontractor safety plans for alignment with established requirements
- Participate in incident investigations and support development and follow-up of corrective actions
- Apply hazard recognition and professional judgment to recommend risk-appropriate controls within established program requirements
- Represent ESH in project-level coordination and field engagement with contractors and stakeholders
- Provide field feedback to Program Managers and SMEs to support continuous improvement of safety programs, procedures, and tools
Position Requirements
- Familiarity with 10 CFR 851 and OSHA 1926 Construction Standards & OSHA 1910 General Industry, and other applicable safety requirements
- Ability to review Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and identify hazards and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with frontline workers and contractors
- Experience conducting pre- and post-project walkdowns, safety audits, and field inspections
- Ability to apply judgment within established policies, procedures, and program requirements
- Basic understanding of interfaces among national laboratories, federal government, private sector, and academic institutions
- Experience with data tracking and analysis tools such as Excel, PowerPoint; familiarity with Power BI or Cority is a plus
Education Requirements
- Associate’s degree and 8+ years of experience in providing construction field-level safety support; or
- Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience; or
- Master’s degree and 2+ years of relevant experience.
Preferred Skills:
- Background in construction or research environments.
- OSHA authorized construction instructor credential.
- Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification (desirable).

The expected hiring range for this position is $86,299.00 - $134,626.05.
