Job Summary

The Community Research Nurse will collaborate with Dr. Laura Arbour’s research team on a project titled, “The Impact of Long QT syndrome on the First Nations People of Northern British Columbia”.  The position will be based in Northern BC, within commuting distance of the Hazelton communities.  The successful candidate will be a trained nurse with experience working in Indigenous communities, and deep understanding of the unique ethical, social, and cultural considerations involved in conducting research withing these communities. This role demands a high level of independence and professional judgment, as the Community Research Nurse will be working in a remote location far from the Principal Investigator and will be expected to carry out responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Duties will include but are not limited to: coordinating the logistics of the glucose monitoring portion of the study, applying glucose monitors to participants and obtaining informed consent, offering support, education, and guidance to the participants, assessing study progress, implementing study protocols, entering and verifying study data, and providing recommendations to the Principal Investigator and research team.

Organizational Status
The incumbent will report directly to Dr. Laura Arbour, the Principal Investigator, and the Genetic Counsellor in Victoria, BC.  However, as the position is based in a remote community, the incumbent will be expected to complete duties with a high degree of independence, professional judgment, and minimal supervision.

  • Evaluate study protocols and research progress, and provide recommendations to Principal Investigator
  • Participate in regular meetings with the Principal Investigator and Research team.
  • Obtain consent and apply glucose monitors on research participants.
  • Coordinate the activities of the Glucose monitoring project.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The research coordinator’s performance must strictly align with the study protocol (approved by the UBC Clinical Ethics Board) and Tri-Council policy statements. A high level of cultural competence and sensitivity is essential in this role, as any insensitivity could jeopardize our long-standing research relationship with the community. Additionally, the Community Research Nurse must sign a confidentiality agreement, ensuring that any identifying or personal information is kept in the strictest confidence. Any misuse of participant data would compromise the research program and future funding opportunities.

Excellent communication skills are also crucial. The Principal Investigator is located outside of the community, relying on the Community Research Nurse to act independently based on professional judgment and to alert the Principal Investigator to any unexpected events regarding the safety of study participants or research conduct. Poor communication with patients could jeopardize their participation in the study. Inaccuracies or incomplete data collection, such as incorrect data entry or coding errors, could lead to erroneous data analysis and study results. Therefore, it is essential that the Community Research Nurse is detail-oriented and meticulous in their work.

Supervision Received
The incumbent will work with minimal supervision and will be accountable for the accuracy and reliability of their work.  Supervision will be provided remotely (via phone/e-mail) from Dr. Laura Arbour and the Genetic Counsellor (MSc) in Victoria.
