This is a 21-hours per week position. Additional hours and extension beyond the initial term may be possible depending on operational requirements and in accordance with the CUPE 2950 Collective Agreement.

Job Summary

The Communications Coordinator promotes academic programs, public events, educational programs, and research related to the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm.

The Communications Coordinator plays an important role in contributing to the implementation of communications and marketing plans for the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm and its signature programs. Duties include creating compelling content for websites, social media, and print materials, and organizing events in collaboration with program leads and the marketing-communications team.  

The Centre for Sustainable Food Systems (CSFS) comprises the research, teaching and cultivation activities at the UBC Farm, as well as sustainable food systems research and teaching that takes place across UBC campus. The CSFS supports collaborations in B.C., across Canada, and around the globe. The UBC Farm is part of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, and serves as the main teaching and research site for the CSFS.


Organizational Status

The successful candidate will report to the Director of Marketing and Communications in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. Goals will be developed in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Communications. The Communications Coordinator will work independently once goals are established, while also working as part of the Faculty’s communications team and liaising with work learn students, and CSFS program leads and staff.

Work Performed

  • Raises awareness of the CSFS at UBC Farm by planning and implementing marketing and communications campaigns, working with program leads and accessing support from the Faculty of Land and Food Systems communications team.

  • Creates clear and compelling content to promote events such as public markets and workshops, academic activities, and special projects.

  • Supports distribution of content through appropriate communications channels (website, e-news, social media, and print).

  • Provides support in organizing events at UBC Farm such as themed farmers’ markets and proprietary events.

  • Encourages public and producer engagement by attending key industry events such as the Pacific Agriculture Show.

  • Oversees the production of newsletters.

  • Ensures campaign materials align with branding guidelines.

  • Uses analytics to make recommendations for future campaigns, and assists in the physical and digital distribution of campaigns and materials to target audiences.

  • Assists in maintaining databases and reports of CSFS program key indicators, communications contacts, and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) members.

  • Contributes to annual progress reports evaluating the reach and effectiveness of communications and knowledge products.

  • Maintains and updates an Editorial Communications Calendar to track campaigns throughout the calendar year.

  • Performs other related duties as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Communications Coordinator will be expected to maintain the professional high standards for reporting of accurate content in materials to uphold the reputation and credibility of the CSFS, the Faculty and University.

Supervision Received
Works independently under minimal supervision and direction of the Director of Marketing and Communications in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. Liaises with CSFS program leads and staff.

Supervision Given
Assists in the guidance of communications Work Learn students. Supervises one seasonal student or employee throughout the year.

Minimum Qualifications
Post-secondary degree or diploma, and one year of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in a relevant discipline such as communications, journalism, marketing, environmental science, agriculture or food systems is preferred.

  • One year of experience in public relations/marketing, knowledge translation, graphic design, or project management is preferred.

  • Experience with digital communications and marketing platforms, including coordinating promotional campaigns.

Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including preparing reports, articles and promotional content for a variety of audiences.

  • Strong writing and editing skills required, in order to translate technical, research-based documents into plain language for a general audience.

  • Computer experience at an advanced level is required (e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel) with knowledge of Canva, InDesign, and Illustrator.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to receive and give feedback, ask questions, and develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.

  • Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous manner with an equity lens and an appreciation of different life experiences.

  • Ability to be open-minded, demonstrate good judgment, approach work with energy, exercise a creative approach, and be willing to suggest and test new ideas.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in a collaborative, dynamic and creative team environment.

  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail especially in proofreading and copy editing.

  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to oversee the work of students effectively.

  • Video and/or audio editing experience an asset.
