Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, New Student Experience, the Communications Assistant will be responsible for assisting with implementation of communication plan, general communications tasks, including preparing graphics, social media, website and newsletter content creation, and assisting with day-to-day communications tasks.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain the communication plan and assist with implementation as directed.
  • Review CL&E and other SLL Unit’s calendars of events to prepare communications materials. Keep abreast of trends or events in other SLL units and bring these and other ideas for social media engagement back to the larger team.
  • Create graphics for social media and other communications needs (signage, programming materials, etc.)
  • Create social media content for Instagram and other platforms.
  • Keep abreast of first-year student events and programming and ensure that this information is brought back to the team so that connections can be developed with CL&E programming.
  • Assist the team in bolstering event promotion by seeking different avenues, including listservs, postering locations, digital screens, etc. This includes but is not limited to liaising with student groups, student societies and university organizations for information exchange and collaboration.
  • Collaborate with the CL&E team and its partners on larger social media campaigns, such as orientation, Get Involved, Midterm Bounceback, and more.
  • Assist with management of the Entering Class Facebook groups and Discord servers.
  • Review and edit promotional texts and new student newsletters.
  • Outreach activities, including tabling.
  • Assist CL&E team with other general office duties, as needed.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Currently registered as a full-time student in any degree program at McGill University
  • Will be a returning student in Fall 2026
  • Experience creating social media graphics using Canva, an asset
  • Work Study qualified, an asset

OTHER QUALIFYING SKILLS AND/OR ABILITIES

  • Experience in communications is preferred with excellent knowledge of social media platforms, especially Instagram and Facebook. Knowledge of Discord an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience creating social media content in a professional setting
  • Willingness to participate on camera doing voiceovers or presenting information (for social media content)
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and time management skills.
  • A can-do attitude and familiarity with work in a busy environment.
  • Ability to multi-task, problem-solve and work independently and as part of a team
  • Good knowledge of campus services, resources, and programs or willing to learn about these.
  • Punctual, organized and professional
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, intermediate oral and written French
  • Knowledge of English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 spoken (fluent) and 4 written (fluent) on a scale of 0-4.

Number of hours per week: 30 hours per week from May 1 to August 30; 15 hours per week during fall and winter semesters.

(Some weekend and evening work will be required for special events during orientation) 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Candidate receives regular review of work. Employee works within the framework of established procedures and receives direction as to objectives and policies. Work supervised may be of a routine or variable nature.
