Idaho Power Company (IPC) — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a Communication Technician Apprentice or Journeyman to join our Planning, Engineering, and Construction team. What does a Communication Technician Apprentice or Journeyman do for us?

They ensure secure operation of the interconnected electrical power system by installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, repairing, testing, and maintaining communications systems (i.e., digital microwave, DWDM, MPLS, TDM, IP LAN and WAN, power line carrier, satellite, IP and analog telephone, fiber optic, leased circuit, trunked mobile radio, dispatch console, wireless RF data collection and control, cellular equipment, alarm backhaul, and other associated communications-related electronic equipment that supports internal and external Idaho Power customers).

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • Applied theory of electronics and electricity and mathematics
  • Communications systems and software
  • Reading schematics and diagrams
  • Construction tools and techniques
  • Electronic and electric measurement tools, equipment and troubleshooting techniques
  • Mathematics of power measurement
  • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system operation and trouble isolation
  • Protective relaying basics
  • Major components and function of an electric utility power system
  • Physical layer or layer one communication cables and connector types

Skills in:

  • Troubleshooting techniques using analysis and deductive reasoning
  • Proficient use of test equipment for evaluating communications hardware and system performance
  • Effective use of schematics and diagrams
  • Proficient use of power and hand tools, construction tools, crimpers, wire cutters, strippers, and splicers, and other tools used in the communications industry
  • Computer operating systems, hardware, and interfaces

Ability to:

  • Work independently and in a team environment
  • Work with a high degree of accountability to meet operations, regulatory, and organizational requirements
  • Manage multiple projects while keeping up with scheduled maintenance
  • Operate company vehicle, UTV’s and ATV’s safely in adverse weather or off-road conditions


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Apprentice

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

AND

  • Associates degree in electronics discipline-with a preference in communication applications

OR

  • Equivalent military electronics training

OR

  • Completion of a related formal apprenticeship training program recognized by the Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship (OA) that encompasses an electronic discipline

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience

Experience:

  • 2 or more years of work experience maintaining electronic communications equipment

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days
  • Successfully complete Idaho Power ATV/UTV operation and Tower Rescue training

Journeyman

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED

AND

  • Associates degree in electronics discipline-with a preference in communication applications

OR

  • Equivalent military electronics training

OR

  • Completion of a related formal apprenticeship training program recognized by the Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship (OA) that encompasses an electronic discipline

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience

Experience:

  • 5 or more years of work experience maintaining electronic communications equipment

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
  •  FCC General Operator License
  • Must obtain a First Aid/CPR card within 90 days
  • Successfully complete Idaho Power ATV/UTV operation and Tower Rescue training


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position lifts/carries up to 35 lbs. up to 20 feet in testing, maintaining, repairing, and installing communication equipment. Sustained awkward postures with crouching, kneeling, bending/stooping, and twisting is required in performing manual dexterity activities, gripping, pushing, pulling, and using hand tools.  Hiking or snowshoeing up to 1 mile is performed to reach towers and climbing ladder on 20-140 ft tower (utilizing safety equipment). 50-60% of communications work is performed on the laptop. Driving up to 4.5 hours as necessary and with occasional operation of snowmachines/snowcat or potentially riding in helicopter to reach communication towers in winter. To ensure the manufacturer's rated capacity of bucket trucks are not exceeded, applicants body weight cannot exceed 300 lbs. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Enrollment in the IPC Communication Technician Apprenticeship Training Program. Must abide by Idaho Power Company's safety rules and regulations. Complete any required Company and safety training.


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Must live and be able to respond to the assigned regional operations center, under normal driving conditions, within 45 minutes or less. Stands on-call on a rotational basis to provide 24-hour support. Maintains regular and punctual attendance and performs other duties as assigned.
