Combat System Safety Engineer

Adelaide - 21 Third Avenue Full time

The role

As part of our Defence Delivery Organisation, and working under the guidance of the Safety Engineering Lead, the Combat System Safety Engineer will apply systems engineering principles to contribute to safety engineering activities. While gaining an understanding of complex combat systems integration, they will apply systems thinking in the contribution and development of safety engineering artefacts including safety plans, hazard logs, safety assessments, safety cases, environmental impact assessments and reports.

Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Contribute to systems engineering, safety and environmental expertise within Combat Systems Engineering
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of Hunter Combat Systems safety and environmental management plans
  • Perform product safety and environmental safety assessment activities
  • Contribute to the development of safety and environmental arguments for Hunter Combat Systems, including communications, navigation, above water warfare, underwater warfare, information systems (including software) sometimes from first principles
  • Record safety hazards in the Hunter Class Hazard Logs
  • Contribute to the derivation, management and sell-off of safety requirements on Hunter Combat Systems including the use of DOORs
  • Contribute to the generation and maintenance of Tier 1 System Design Safety Assessments.

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office and a 9-day fortnight will be considered for this role.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant discipline and/or relevant experience within the defence sector
  • Five years as a systems engineer, preferably in defence projects and complex systems
  • Systems engineering lifecycle, methods, tools and techniques
  • Working in an engineering project, multi-disciplinary environment, preferably within the defence industry
  • Working with a broad set of internal stakeholders and external partnering organisations to achieve common goals
  • Development methodologies on complex systems using a documented process
  • Working with combat system requirements within a maritime context (desirable)
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills, including report and technical writing
  • Excellent conceptual and analytical skills with a strong attention to detail
  • Strong ability to adapt and maintain a flexible approach to changing needs or priorities
  • Excellent initiative, self-motivation, pro-active and willingness to accept responsibility
  • Friendly and approachable.

Applicants must be Australian citizens hold or be able to obtain an Australian Defence Security Clearance to at least NV1.
