Underwriter I (Commercial Auto)
Location: This position will be located at Regina Head Office. This role is eligible for hybrid work – this means you’ll have the flexibility of working from home and in the office (indicated above), on a scheduled rotation once probation requirements have been met. Until then, the successful incumbent will be expected to work on-site, full-time.

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY
The Underwriter I (Commercial Auto) is responsible for underwriting moderately complex insurance risks. This position evaluates, rates, and process insurance requests for Commercial Auto products. Underwriting decisions are governed by manuals/guidelines, predetermined procedures, and authority levels. The Underwriter I is customer-focused and looks for ways to improve the customer experience. The Underwriter I develops and maintains relationships with brokers which contributes to lasting and profitable relationships. The Underwriter I provides work review and approval to staff in junior positions.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Underwriting Operations
Reviews and evaluates quotes, new applications, renewals, revisions, and cancellations to determine risk acceptability within current underwriting authority.
Researches and obtains additional information on risk if required.
Makes timely decisions while considering risk territory, underwriting guidelines and market conditions.
Meets target service levels with respect to product, transactions, phone calls and emails
Determines if risk is acceptable, needs modification, or should be declined based on analysis of all information pertinent to the risk and within the underwriter's authority.
Calculates premiums, ensuring that appropriate rates are used, and that application discounts and surcharges are applied. Provides terms to brokers as to the conditions, limitations, rates, and premiums to apply.
Corresponds with brokers to request information and explain underwriting requirements and decisions.
Supports, provides direction, and reviews and approves the work of staff in junior positions (including trainees)
Learns & applies understanding of the policy wordings, conditions, limitations, rates, and premiums with a strong focus on customer needs.
Develops a basic understanding of existing and emerging industry trends and market conditions
Identifies improvements to processes and procedures.
Broker Experience and Relationship Management
Acts as the brokers first point of contact and sees requests through to completion; becomes a trusted advisor for brokers.
Develops and maintains working relationships with brokers to generate a flow of profitable business and provides assistance in resolving any service matters.
Identifies opportunities to improve broker experience and seeks to find solutions while adhering to the company guidelines and underwriting authority.
Explains underwriting criteria and decisions to brokers.
Works with other departments to deliver a consistent experience to brokers and customers.
Assists with training to staff, brokers, and external parties on products and procedures. May be required to conduct formal presentations.
Understands the underwriting operating system, workflows and process, broker portal and billing.
Promotes and offers supporting products to brokers with an emphasis on meeting customer needs.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Proficient knowledge of operations and related assets of appropriate business area (Commercial Auto, Commercial Property or Farm).
Proficient knowledge of the coverages of insurance products and related provincial/federal legislation applicable to the appropriate business area (Commercial Auto, Commercial Property or Farm).
Proficient knowledge of the Principles & Practices of Insurance
Proficient knowledge and skill of the rating procedures, the interpretation and application of established criteria and/or procedures to determine appropriate premiums, coverages, and deductibles for insurance products related to the appropriate business area (Commercial Auto, Commercial Property, Farm)
Fundamental knowledge of reinsurance principles.
EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS
A two-year diploma from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study, such as Business, or defined equivalency.
EXPERIENCE
1 - 3 years’ experience in underwriting.
