OVERVIEW

In the Department of Community Services at Multnomah County, we look for people who can grow, think, lead, and inspire.  We have a culture that thrives on diversity and rewards commitment to public service.  We seek leaders, achievers, and doers who bring skill and passion to a challenging and evolving environment.

We are excited to announce that our Animal Services division is currently looking for experienced and self-motivated team players to join us as Animal Technician 2’s in our shelter in Troutdale, Oregon. We currently have three (2) full-time regular positions in our Animal Care unit, which focuses on either enrichment and daily care of pets, or providing adoption and/or admission of new incoming animals. Additionally, we have one (1) open position within our Animal Health unit. Our Animal Health team is dedicated to the day to day medical needs of the pets within our organization.

Do you consider yourself to be both an animal person and a people person? As an Animal Technician 2, you will support the program’s mission within the shelter. You will be self-motivated and organized with excellent listening and oral communication skills. Your curiosity about why animals behave the way they do and human-animal relationships will lead you to find the best solution possible for every issue you encounter. You’ll have top notch customer service skills and going the extra mile is just the way you do business. You’ll embrace the opportunity to interact with people from cultural backgrounds different from your own.

Animal Services is transforming its operations and approach to an equitable service model that focuses on under-resourced communities and removing barriers to pet adoptions or other placements. As part of this transformation, an Animal Technician 2 must be open to understanding culturally responsive practices and implementing changes in our operations that decrease the overall length of animal stays.

In this role, you will:

  • Have the ability to promote a culture of respect, inclusiveness, and appreciation of diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and values
  • Provide a high level of professional customer service and perform duties while working effectively with sometimes difficult clientele
  • Have the ability to communicate in a friendly, open, and respectful manner in person, over the telephone, and via email
  • Have strong animal handling skills and experience using low-stress techniques on unfamiliar animals
  • Have the ability to gather and communicate medical and/or behavior information on animals in care to assist in proper placement of animals

Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily care of a variety of different  animals within the shelter, including cleaning, feeding, and daily enrichment
  • Facilitate introductions of pets to potential adopters, conduct any necessary consultations/conversations and show animals to prospective adopters
  • Observing, identifying, and recording behavior information for animals in care, including levels of fear, anxiety, and stress.
  • Perform admission exams for incoming animals to include vaccine administration and data entry
  • Provide customer service via in-person, email, and phone to a wide variety of clients, including the general public, shelter staff, and shelter volunteers
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records in the shelter database
  • Assisting pet owners in locating and identifying lost animals

Additional duties in the Animal Technician role include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform humane euthanasia of animals that are not appropriate for placement in the community for behavioral or medical reasons
