The Education Media Design Specialist is responsible for collaborating with instructional designers, faculty, and subject matter experts to design and develop original multimedia educational content for online courses. This role manages media projects from inception to completion, ensuring a polished and professional end-product. The position involves designing highly interactive and engaging multimedia content and simulations using tools such as Articulate Storyline and Rise, TechSmith Camtasia, audio/video editing software, and graphic design tools like InDesign and Photoshop. Additionally, the Education Media Design Specialist reviews media projects created by the Center for Instructional Innovation (CII), providing suggestions and guidance to enhance the visual appeal, creative design, and ensure adherence to industry-standard graphic design practices and university brand guidelines.

Note: This position is hybrid, primarily working remotely but on occasion traveling to our on campus studio. Candidates must be within reasonable driving distance from the Central Admin Office in Aliso Viejo, CA 92656.

The hiring range for this position is $72,642 - $81,800 annually. Offers are determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to: geographical location, knowledge, skills, years & depth of experience, and equity with internal team members.

TYPE OF SUPERVISION: 

Receive direction from the Director, Educational Media.

  • General Supervision — indicates that the incumbent attains specific goals and objectives in a broad area of work. Only the final results of work done are typically reviewed. Incumbent typically develops procedures within the limits of established policy guidelines.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Percentage

Original Media Design and Development

  • Collaborate with Instructional Designers and Faculty to create visually appealing, ADA and WCAG compliant, educational materials and interactive multimedia content using tools like  InDesign, Photoshop, Articulate Storyline and Rise, TechSmith Camtasia.
  • Manage video production projects, including studio operations, and provide direction to onscreen talent, ensuring all content adheres to university brand guidelines.
  • Resolve issues related to deadlines and priorities, develop processes to improve service quality and ensure functionality for students and staff.
  • Conduct user testing to gather data-driven insights, refine instructional media, and validate usability throughout the development process.
  • Stay current with design and technology trends, adopting modern techniques across web, desktop, and mobile platforms.
  • Organize and maintain file storage forstudio projects, and develop/maintain project workflows.
  • Communicate with university support services to create training materials for faculty and students, enhancing the online education experience.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Educational Media to create media templates and ensure consistent program design.
  • Seek and participate in training opportunities (conferences, online coursework, seminars) to stay updated on educational technology trends.

Graphic Design

  • Provide training and mentorship to instructional designers on best practices in graphic design and multimedia content creation.
  • Manage the development, design and structure of the CII website and all asynchronous resources.
  • Review media projects created by the CII, offering guidance to enhance visual appeal and maintain high design standards.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Specialized Degree in Educational Technology, Fine Arts, Graphic Design or other applicable study
  • 5+ years experience in graphic design, proven experience in web development and multimedia design or a related field.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).
  • Experience with multimedia authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline, Rise, and TechSmith Camtasia.
  • Strong skills in audio/video editing and production.
  • Experience designing and developing online courses using authoring tools, multimedia software, and learning management systems (LMS) such as Brightspace, Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, or similar platforms.
  • Adaptability to embrace new technologies, methodologies, and instructional strategies, staying current with emerging trends and best practices in instructional design and educational technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with instructional designers, faculty, subject matter experts, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and guidance to enhance multimedia projects.
  • Thorough understanding of brand guidelines and the ability to ensure all content aligns with university branding and marketing expectations.
  • Experience conducting quality assurance reviews for multimedia content to ensure compliance with accessibility and branding standards.
  • Proven ability to design, develop, and deliver effective training programs and workshops for diverse audiences, including faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, managing multiple projects simultaneously and adapting to changing priorities.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple media projects simultaneously, set timelines, and allocate resources effectively.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure high-quality outputs.
  • Demonstrated understanding of accessibility standards, including Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), Section 508, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.
  • Experience applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to instructional design, ensuring that course materials and learning experiences are accessible to diverse learners with varying abilities, learning styles, and preferences.
  • Ability to conduct accessibility audits, evaluate course content for accessibility barriers, and implement strategies to create inclusive and accessible learning environments that accommodate learners with disabilities.
