Job Summary:

Bucknell University’s Samek Art Museum is seeking positive, outgoing individuals to serve as museum guides. This is an ideal position for retirees or others who desire to be involved in arts and the community without the obligation of a heavy work schedule. Located on Market Street in Downtown Lewisburg, the museum guide regularly interacts with members of the public as they encounter individuals who may be leaving the Campus Theater across the street, or others stopping to examine the exhibition while walking through town. Museum public hours of operation are Wednesday through Friday, 12-5pm, and Saturday-Sunday, 10am-5pm. This position will work primarily during those hours with occasional early evening events and informational sessions.

Job Duties:

While the University is in session (largely Sep-Nov, & Jan-May), the Community Guide can expect to work 5-10 hours per week.  During University breaks (Dec & Jan; June, July, August), one has the ability to expand those hours to between 10-20 hours per week. 

This position works independently, and is entrusted with the responsibility of serving as the public face of the museum and first point of contact for visitors. Museum Guides ensure the safety of the gallery and collection as well as provide a friendly and welcoming experience to visitors. The museum guide reports directly to the operations coordinator.  This position will also occasionally work with the public programs and outreach manager during scheduled public events. The museum guide fulfills their duties in accordance with campus, state, and federal policies and laws as well as in keeping with museum and gallery professional practices.

Job Duties:

  • Serve as public face for the museum and first point of contact for visitors

  • Greet and engage audience with artwork

  • Keep daily tally of visitor attendance

  • Open and close gallery for public hours

  • Read and contemplate provided educational materials about the exhibitions

  • Maintain security of the gallery and collection

  • Keep museum staff informed about condition of galleries and artwork

Position Requirements:

  • Interest in art, art history, museum studies, education, or hospitality

  • Outgoing and friendly demeanor with the public

  • Must be available weekends and during Bucknell University recesses 

  • Must be available for mandatory paid meetings and training sessions, typically held in the early evening.

  • Ability to work effectively as an independent self-starter

  • Successful completion of require background clearances

This position is a part-time, casual, non-benefits-eligible staff position.

The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy. 

This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.
