JOB SUMMARY:

The Jefferson County Department of Health is seeking to hire a Medical Technologist
to perform technical and specialized work that involves conducting and interpreting serological, bacteriological, hematological, and/or biochemical tests to provide data for diagnostic purposes for the treatment and prevention of disease. Incumbents in this job class maintain laboratory products and supplies and ensure they are properly stored. They also conduct quality assurance practices, quality control testing, troubleshooting testing methodologies, and calibrating laboratory equipment to ensure proper functionality. Work is performed according to prescribed procedures and is reviewed through observation, reports, and obtained results.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for employment in this position, a candidate must possess the following:

  • High complexity laboratory experience (e.g., toxicology, hematology, chemistry, microbiology). 

  • Successful completion of at least one college-level course in Statistics.

  • Work experience performing quality assurance procedures in a medical laboratory (e.g., linearities, correlations, establishing control ranges, updating laboratory procedures and policies).


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred qualifications are experiences, education, and/or other job-related qualifications considered to be highly desirable by Merit System agencies. The preferred qualifications may be used by the hiring agency to identify applicants to invite to participate in subsequent selection processes.

  • Medical Technologist certification from a nationally recognized accrediting agency (e.g., ASCP, AMT).

  • Previous work experience as a Medical Technologist.

JOB DUTIES

Typical job duties include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Performs a variety of laboratory tests for specimen analysis using the appropriate established techniques of one or more of the following laboratory specialties: chemistry, hematology and coagulation, immunology, immunohematology, microbiology, and urinalysis.

  • Receives, evaluates, and processes patient specimens using established procedures and protocol in order to ensure that adequate specimens are collected for successful analysis.

  • Analyzes test results using established techniques and laboratory orders to provide information and data on the specimen in order to assist doctor in diagnosing patient.

  • Maintains proper functioning of testing equipment by troubleshooting problems with equipment, performing regular routine maintenance, and conducting quality assurance testing on equipment prior to performing tests on specimens to ensure successful specimen analysis.

  • Provides training and guidance to new employees by answering questions and providing feedback and assistance on work performed by laboratory staff.

  • Stores and organizes all laboratory products and supplies (e.g., specimens, reagents, controls) according to storage room policies and procedures in order to ensure items are safely and properly stored and available for laboratory use.

  • Updates and maintains laboratory information systems by identifying errors, testing systems, upgrading systems, and ensuring all technology systems are communicating appropriately in order to ensure the system is working properly.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is conducted mostly indoors in a clinical/medical laboratory setting. Work involves the use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc., as well as specialized Clinical/Medical Laboratory equipment.  Incumbents may be exposed to potentially hazardous working conditions including working in a clinical/medical laboratory, potential exposure to biohazardous materials and other potentially dangerous chemicals.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting and/or standing for long periods of time.  May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
